Help us to "Light up Loneliness" by encouraging your local council to get involved.

Loneliness is a growing issue for Kiwis of all ages. But the good news is, that it is solvable!

The NZ Coalition to End Loneliness is running a ‘Light up loneliness’ campaign this month to raise awareness and encourage action on loneliness across Aotearoa.

The New Zealand Coalition to End Loneliness is a growing group of non-profit organisations, businesses and researchers working together to end loneliness for individuals, in communities, and at workplaces in New Zealand.

They are now calling on Local Government to help them “Light up loneliness”.

“Imagine if every Mayor and Council across New Zealand helped promote the “Lets End Loneliness” website and made tackling loneliness a priority, using their own local community resources,” says Stephanie Clare, Age Concern New Zealand Chief Executive.

“It would be a gamechanger. Taking this issue out of the shadows, reducing the stigma and shame, and giving it light is the aim of the campaign” she says.

Social connection is a key factor for healthy, prosperous people, communities, and workplaces, but loneliness in New Zealand is increasing. In the March 2021 quarter 18.4% of New Zealanders felt lonely most, all or some of the time, up from 16.6% in 2018, and 13.9% in 2014.

“Many of us have experienced loneliness at some time in our lives and we know that feels horrible, but it can be addressed and solved. Together we can end loneliness for New Zealanders who feel isolated” says Sam Johnson, Founder and Chief Executive of Student Volunteer Army.

The letsendloneliness.co.nz website provides information on tackling loneliness and where to get help, as well as up-to-date news and research.

“The website is designed as a source of information which also links people to support services. We challenge every Local Council in New Zealand to create a link on their own websites to letsendloneliness.co.nz” says Sam Johnson.

The recent COVID-19 lockdown highlights that everyone can feel isolated and lonely. Catherine Hall, Chief Executive of Alzheimers New Zealand believes everyone should feel safe, supported, loved, and connected.

“Sadly, people often find family, whānau and friends take a step back just when they need them most. We stand alongside our coalition partners and with all New Zealanders, to make sure no one feels alone.”

Help light up loneliness! The campaign is not just for councils. Anyone can create a link to the letsendloneliness.co.nz or post a mention through social media channels to support the ‘Light up loneliness’ campaign.

Together we can end loneliness, one person, one community, one workplace at a time.

Public meeting in Hurunui over Government's proposed Three Waters reform

Hurunui mayor Marie Black says Sunday’s gathering at the Glenmark Rugby Grounds will provide a forum for locals to discuss their concerns.

“Hurunui District Councillors have unanimously adopted a statement opposing the Government’s Three Waters Reform. We know however, that the council’s voice alone isn’t enough. Ratepayers have real issues with the proposed reforms and Sunday’s meeting is all about giving them a voice," she said in a statement.

Black said there was a real sense that water assets belonged to the community.

“Pipes were literally laid by hand by locals in the 1950s and 1960s, when land owners were given the choice to chip in and pay for new infrastructure or pay in manual labour. It means that for many farmers today, it was their fathers and grandfathers who actually built their water systems.”

“There’s a real lack of understanding in Wellington about how important the ownership of water assets is to our community.”

Black said the proposed reforms also ignored the importance of local knowledge.

“Most farmers know exactly who their utilities person is. If they have a problem, they call them and it is fixed. Having these local relationships is priceless.”

Hurunui District Council chief executive Hamish Dobbie said the reforms opened the door to the future privatisation of water assets.

He believed people had lost total faith in the democratic process.

“Government initially promised councils we would have the chance to opt out of the proposed reforms but have since gone back on that promise. It’s clear that it now comes down to people power and giving our local community the opportunity to be heard.”

Event details:
Glenmark Rugby Grounds
2.30pm to 4pm (Speeches will begin at 2.30pm)
Sunday, November 14

The event will be available to watch virtually via Facebook Live on the Hurunui District Council FB page.

Mayors across New Zealand are mobilising against the Government’s push to force water reform on councils.

Waimakariri mayor Dan Gordon is leading the charge, and has drafted a letter to Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern seeking “an audience” with her to discuss different approaches to the three waters reform.

The Government announced late last month it was bringing in legislation to create four publicly-owned entities to control drinking water, wastewater and stormwater.

These services have traditionally been the core business of 67 councils across New Zealand, and the mandate has caused almost universal outrage among them.

Gordon said he had asked mayors and councils if they wanted to co-sign his letter because it was imperative the views of the sector were accurately and fully represented.

“We owe it to our communities to play an active role in any change which will affect them.”
