"This is the little ringed plover (Charadrius dubius) in the Kasai Rinkai Park in Toyko Bay. A large park with wetlands, surrounded by city and full of birds (and bird hides). I met quite a few Japanese birders here. They were very helpful with IDs. The bird looks quite a lot like our black-fronted dotterel. Bird #48 in 2023."

We're on the lookout for the most beautiful spots in New Zealand, and would love to hear your favourites.
While it will be impossible to include all of them in one article, we'd appreciate your help in narrowing it down. What do you think are most beautiful places in NZ's regions? Do you have a favourite spot in the Waikato, Taranaki, Canterbury, Southland or elsewhere?
Feel free to comment below, send me a message or email me at lorna.thornber@stuff.co.nz. Please include 'NFP' in your comment if you do not want it or your name included in an article. Thanks in advance for taking the time to share.

With online being the main mode of communication these days, it's no wonder that there has been a worldwide mail decline and here in Aotearoa, NZ Post has needed to lay off 750 full-time staff. Do you think it's time to say goodbye to the trusty letterbox?

Heart attack is a leading cause of death in New Zealand.
Learn to recognise the warning signs and symptoms of a heart attack, so you know what to do if you see or experience them. Don’t try to walk it off, wash it off or push through it. Make the right call, it may save your life.

The Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency has a survey out asking about the soon to expire Gazette notice that declared escooters 'not motor vehicles'. This permits them to use the footpath. We say no to renewing the Gazette notice and making footpaths safer for all pedestrians.
We have heard from many people about the issues they face everyday with fast moving vehicles on the footpath whizzing past and giving them a fright - this puts many people off walking more than the minimum. Other people report frequently encountering blocked footpaths with escooters scattered over them. Many people can not move the heavy scooters and either have to backtrack in a wheelchair for instance until they can find a way around, others walk out on the road.
There are many ways to better regulate escooters as they do in most other countries and keep them off the footpaths, for instance ebikes are not registered and can use both road and cycle lane.
Please take the survey and support safer footpaths

All the places I am finding on the internet want to charge you and if there is a free option that would be great. It could be repaired and given to someone who needs it but I am not sure what the problem is (maybe the pump needs replacing). Has been a solid performer for over 15 years until recently. Pick up Mt Vic, on the flat. Thanks.

I was walking my golden retriever George on leash yesterday evening, with a friend and her small dogs. We went up Russell Terrace on the footpath, past Newtown Park, and were heading towards the council access road to the skatepark, back of the zoo, and athletic track. There was a station wagon / van with an open sliding door parked up in the gravel park by the skate park, a tan pitbull in the van saw us from a distance and took off for us like a rocket. It immediately attacked my dog, latching onto his neck. I attempted to block, kick it off etc. Every time George shook it off him it would dive back in and latch on again.
I was pushed back into the street, while still hanging onto George's leash and trying to rotate them to get myself between them. The owner showed up and couldn't get hold of his dog who was 100% committed to the attack. By then I'd been knocked onto my back with both dogs on top of me, and the man on top of his dog trying to pin it. He eventually managed to get it off and half dragged it back to his vehicle, threw it in and drove off.
On the positive, entirely miraculously I didn't get bitten but am quite banged up from being thrown to the ground. George has some minor scrapes and a puncture in his ear and is still tense and shaken. He was wearing a thick collar, an LED lighting collar, a scarf and his leash. The pitbull was fixated on his neck which was protected by all his gear. So although it locked on his neck there were no punctures. George is a big strong boy and managed to keep on his feet.
A number of very kind people stopped cars and bikes while this was happening. One got the car registration. It's been reported to the police and also to animal control who are trying to track down the driver and have asked if the witnesses would mind coming forward. We were too shaken to take your details. The fact that it came after us from a distance, attack was both completely unprovoked and sustained is worrying to them. Can you either DM me or message me below if you witnessed this! It was a dark grey kinda station wagon / van thing with a sliding door. Registration BQB816. The dog was a mid size tan pitbull.
