Each year, hundreds of whales and dolphins strand on our shores. Whilst some are sick or injured, others are healthy and just need a helping hand back out to sea. But saving whales isn't as easy as it looks and successful rescue often depends on properly trained volunteers. That's where you come in.
Project Jonah are running two Marine Mammal Medic training courses in Wellington next weekend. Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th November.
Learn the skills needed to look after whales and dolphins when they strand and make a real difference. Wellington is a key region to support the mass strandings that happen on an almost annual basis at Farewell Spit. Once trained you'll be added to our national callout list. That means that when a stranding occurs your lifesaving skills can be called upon.

Join historian Gerard Morris as he takes us through the history of the adoption of New Zealand Standard Time, and Chief Executive of the National Measurement Institute of Australia, Dr Bruce Warrington, who will detail the science behind standard time and the technological innovations such as GPS it enables.
1886 first Cook Strait cable was the beginning
In 1866, the first cable across Cook Strait was laid and regions between Napier and Bluff became connected by telegraph. Variations in operating hours at the relaying and receiving offices along the line initially hinder the smooth transmission of messages.
So, in 1868 the Telegraph Department proclaimed that all offices had to adopt Wellington time.
This move lead to a parliamentary decree establishing a single time for the whole country — the first implementation of standard time in the world, which came into effect on November 2, 1868.
About the speakers
Gerard Morris is a faculty member at Ara Institute in Christchurch and teaches Cultural Studies. He has been a researcher for 40 years and is a member of the Professional Historians Association of New Zealand Aotearoa. His 2012 Masters’ thesis is titled Time and the Making of New Zealand.
Dr Bruce Warrington, Chief Metrologist and CEO of the National Measurement Institute, Australia, a counterpart to and partner of NZ’s Measurement Standards Laboratory. A graduate of the University of Otago, he completed a DPhil in Oxford on atomic physics research and worked with CSIRO in Sydney on the development of atomic clocks

How can I check?
- Public transport provider Metlink is also unsure how the strike will play out, and is urging commuters to check their bus route before they travel. They can do this on the Metlink app or website, which the organisation says will be kept as up-to-date as possible throughout the strike. Alternatively call the Metlink team on 0800 801 700.
- The only Wellington City routes operated by Tranzurban are numbers 1, 7, 17, 19, 23, 24, 25, 26, and 29. The rest of Wellington City routes are operated by NZ Bus, whose drivers will not strike despite a deal not being reached there either. Full list of affected lines here.
While the strike is set down to end on November 30, union secretary Kevin O'Sullivan says that was an arbitrary date chosen only because strike notices legally required an end date.
