Meet the finalists! Secondary schools are invited to National Library of New Zealand for two free events involving four of Aotearoa’s best YA authors. Includes the opportunity to buy books and get them signed by the authors.

There are two sessions in Books Alive. We have designed it so that your school can attend both sessions, to maximise appearances from these fantastic shortlisted authors.

These events are suitable for ages 13 - 17 years.

Session 1
11:00am - 12:00pm: Acclaimed authors Des Hunt ('Search for a Kiwi Killer') and Brin Murray ('Children of the Furnace') talk about their incredible shortlisted books for curious readers and interested writers.

There will be a break between sessions for book sales and signing.

Session 2
12:30pm - 1:30pm: Comic artist Ant Sang ('Helen and the Go-Go Ninjas') and novelist Rachel Craw ('The Rift') give insights into the creation of their latest shortlisted works.

Thank you to everyone who supported the Newtown club through the 2018/19 year including our outgoing District Officers Sarah Davy and Glen Pearce. It was lovely to see everyone join in the celebrations on Wednesday and look back at the last 12 months.

Newtown Toastmasters is now 2 years old and has been doing plenty of walking and talking! We've had Halloween and Xmas-themed meetings, we've hosted an Area Contest, as well as running community workshops to achieving milestone DTM's in the club! It's certainly been a roller coaster of a year! Let's keep the momentum going and start the 2019/20 new year with a bang! Our next meeting is Wed 10th July at the Centre! Hope to see you all there!

Find the black sheep in your family

Did your ancestor ever come up against the police? You may be able to find a record of them in the Police Gazettes! Join archivist Trish McCormack for an overview of what you might find in the Police Gazettes and how to access them.

The Gazettes helped police in the late nineteenth century to track offenders. Digitised by Archives New Zealand, the Gazettes are now accessible worldwide and free of charge. Family researchers love to unearth the activities of a family black sheep. Some even find a photograph of the miscreant!

From charges of 'furious riding' to arson and murder, the crimes are many and varied. You'll find ship and wife deserters, to utterers and church desecrators.

About the speaker
Trish McCormack is an archivist with Research Services at Archives New Zealand. Her job is to connect people with records - be it through the Wellington reading room, remote reference or via social media outlets.

A crime fiction writer in her spare time, she has a special interest in the Gazettes and other criminal records held by Archives New Zealand.

Yet it is not part of our school curriculum.

Some experts say that has to change. It is such an existential threat that not to make it a requirement to teach children about climate change is doing them a great disservice, they say.
