Yesterday a notice of motion was accepted to begin the process of investigating options to establish iwi seats.

It will mean a representative from each of Wellington’s two iwi – Te Āti Awa Taranaki Whānui and Ngāti Toa Rangatira – is appointed to all of the council’s committees and subcommittes by July next year.

Iwi representatives will be paid and have voting rights except at meetings of the full council, which can overturn decisions made by council committees.

The Wellington Marathon has been cancelled following the announcement the region would stay in level 2.

Event manager Michael Jacques, said the decision to cancel was disappointing, especially for the runners who had been training, but they needed to turn their attention to the 2021 event.

The 2250 registered runners would not be receiving a refund, but would be able to enter for free next year.

Jacques said the decision to cancel was "especially gutting" as it was the 35th anniversary of the marathon, which is the longest running running event in Wellington.
