To ensure you start your project off with the right foundations, you need to be selecting a fabric that is most suited to its purpose.

There are various textile constructions/qualities that fall within five fabric “types” we describe in an earlier article. In this two-part article we will discuss the most commonly manufactured constructions that you see in the market today.

DAMASK: Damasks are traditional jacquard fabrics, which were originally woven in a single colour, where the design and ground are in contrasting weaves, (generally using warp-faced and weft-faced satin weaves).

CHINTZ: Chintz is a closely woven plain fabric, traditionally cotton, with a shiny and lustrous appearance. The fabric is processed with a glazed or calendared finish to give it a polished look.

FELT: Felt is matted fabric with a predominantly woollen composition. There are two types of felt, woven and un-woven. Felting of woven wool fabric is achieved by interlocking the natural scales on the surface of wool fibres through heat, moisture, steam, pressure and friction.

FIL COUPÉ: A small jacquard pattern on a lightweight fabric, in which the fil/weft threads connecting each pattern/motif are cut and removed from the reverse of the fabric leaving the remaining pattern/motif with frayed edges.

FAUX-LEATHER (VINYL): Polyvinyl chloride (commonly abbreviated as PVC or referred to as vinyl) is the third-most widely produced polymer after polyethylene and polypropylene. It should not be washed with cleaning solvents, but more specifically only a mixture of gentle soap and warm water.

Something a bit different this week. Louise Thomas features regularly on Neighbourly but it appears she is not the only bird lover in the family.
"This beautiful drawing was a present from my lovely daughter, Caitlin, for my birthday. It's a portrait of a chap who frequents a large tree at the back of our neighbour's section - it borders our section at the back so he is often peering into our yard - this is the view we normally have of him. I've always valued the handcrafted gifts my children give me - looking at them in chronological order is like viewing the ascent of man. This one's going straight to the trophy room. Kererū/wood pigeon (Hemiphaga novaeseelandiae)."

Hi Neighbors,

Ethos Energy is proud to be leading the way in fresh air ventilation for domestic, commercial and education facilities using Mitsubishi Electric Balanced Pressure Lossnay Heat Recovery Ventilation Systems.

The 4 Functions of the Lossnay Core

The Balanced Pressure Lossnay Heat Recovery Ventilation System removes stale, dirty air and draws in fresh air from outside. Lossnay also recovers heat energy from the air being transferred to pre-warm (or pre-cool) the fresh air being drawn into your home. Lossnay is ideal for small to large sized homes between 52m2 and 400m2.

The stale air extracted from your home is Return Air (RA). Return Air can contain high levels of CO2, odours and other pollutants. This Return Air stream also contains heat energy that Lossnay can recover, which is not the case with positive pressure ventilation systems.

As the stale Return Air is removed, the Lossnay Core ‘recovers’ the useful heat energy from it. The air is then exhausted (EA) outside along with the unwanted pollutants.

Outdoor Air (OA) is introduced to provide fresh air. It is first filtered, then passed through the Lossnay Core. This allows it be pre-heated in winter (or pre-cooled in summer) using the energy recovered from the Return Air.

Supply Air (SA) then enters your house as fresh pre-heated or pre-cooled air.
