This month we’re celebrating the diverse array of people who call New Zealand home. Regardless of our different faiths, abilities, cultures, ages, orientations and genders - we want to make sure that our communities are safe and welcoming for all.

There are many ways to take part! From hosting a multicultural potluck or film screening to providing prevention information / resources in other languages, there are thousands of ways big and small to make our households, neighbourhoods, schools and businesses even more inclusive. It could even be as simple as learning from a neighbour how to say ‘hello’ in their first language or ensuring local footpaths are clear and accessible.

Want to share your thoughts? Let us know how you’re creating inclusive communities this month by tagging us in your social media posts or emailing us your photos, videos, or experiences to:

If you are looking for the best spot to view Matariki, the Wellington City Council has produced a list of good viewing spots.
*James Stellin Memorial Park In Northland on Tinakori Hill, James Stellin Memorial Park has stunning 180-degree views over the city to the harbour as well as neat night sky viewing opportunities.
*Tawatawa Reserve is a large flat grassed area that is dog exercise-friendly and is located on Quebec Street, in between the suburbs of Owhiro Bay, Kingston, and Island Bay.
*The Ataturk Memorial Park lookout can be accessed from the Tarakena Bay car park on Breaker Bay Road.
* Waihinahina Park, located on Ladbrooke Drive in Newlands, is an open grassed area surrounded with regenerating bush – an ideal spot for stargazing Matariki on a clear night!
* Homebush Park on Homebush Road in Khandallah, is a hidden playground down a gravel track has breathtaking views over Wellington harbour and the wide-open skies above.
Matariki is found low on the horizon in the northeast of the sky. Try looking there between 5.30am-6.30am.
To find the cluster, first find the row of three stars of Tautoru, or Orion’s Belt (or The Pot). To find Pūanga (Rigel) look above Tautoru until you see the bright star.
From there, scan left until you find the bright orange star, Taumata-kuku (Alderbaran) and keep going until you hit a cluster of stars. That cluster is Matariki.

LOCAL STATE OF EMERGENCY DECLARED FOR SOUTH COAST - PROPERTIES TO BE EVACUATED

Wellington Mayor Andy Foster has declared a local state of emergency from 3.30pm today (Tuesday 29 June).
The emergency declaration is to allow for the pre-emptive evacuation of properties in Breaker Bay that are expected to take the brunt of the Southerly swell and storm expected at high tide tonight (around 9pm).

The area of concern that are to be evacuated are:

- Breaker Bay Road between numbers 53 and 194.

Mayor Foster says advice from the MetService New Zealand and NIWA in the past few hours indicates that southerly swells of 6 metres or more could present a significant risk to life and property if they overtop areas alongside the South Coast – as they did in April 2020 and in 2013.

Mayor Foster says he is advised that we need to have residents evacuated from these areas before the situation turns dangerous for residents and emergency services.

Residents are asked to be clear of these areas by no later than 6pm this evening.

There will be road blocks at the Wahine Memorial Park and the Pass of Branda – at the northern and southern entrances to Breaker Bay - after that time to prevent people entering the area.

The local state of emergency – declared under the Civil Defence Emergency Management Act – will be lifted as soon as it no longer required.

People who are evacuated are asked to stay with family and friends outside the evacuation zones in the first instance.

If people are stuck, they can contact the Wellington City Council on 499-4444.

The photo is from April 2020 when a large swell hits the south coast during Alert Level 2 lockdown.

Nine-year-old Oliver Henwood has been in and out of Wellington Hospital for the past six years, so
he knows first-hand how boring it is to be stuck in a hospital bed.
Born with a bend in his shin bone caused by a growth anomaly, Oliver had major surgery at Wellington Hospital to correct the problem when he was four and has been back many times for ongoing treatment.
When he was tasked at his school to come up with a passion project that would benefit others in the community, he decided to help children staying in Wellington and Hutt Hospitals.
Oliver found watching DVDs a welcome distraction when he was in hospital yet found many were old or scratched so were unusable. He then took it upon himself to ask his local community in Cambridge for help by distributing flyers encouraging people to donate their DVDs. Once he collected more than 150 DVDs, he tested them all to make sure they weren't scratched before donating them.
