More than 5000 people visited the Aston Norwood Cafe & Function Centre’s Japanese-inspired garden last weekend causing chaos along the adjacent State Highway 2 in Upper Hutt.
Aston Norwood owner Mark Rammell said the volume of traffic outside his business caused gridlocks throughout the weekend. Punters began parking along the margins of the roadway up to 500 metres away after the facility’s 270 carparks filled up.
NZTA is putting in extra parking and road markings to deal with the influx.

That was the message to councillors on Tuesday during the first day of public submissions on the future of Wellington’s Central Library.
In June, prior to public consultation, councillors voted 14-1 indicating their preference was to strengthen and upgrade the earthquake-prone building, rather than demolish and rebuild. The $200 million repair option was more expensive than a rebuild, but was preferred because it promised to be open again sooner and would retain heritage elements.
However, there was a strong backlash among some of the public who submitted, many raising concerns over the expense and uncertainty of repair work.

Karori kittens signal beginning of kitten season
Two weeks ago Georgina Lewis took a mother cat and her four kittens into her Karori home after they were brought into the Wellington SPCA Centre. The litter’s arrival signalled the start of kitten season for 2020. The season starts in spring and often runs until June, with a peak in summer.

The litter’s arrival signalled the start of kitten season for 2020. The season starts in spring and often runs until June, with a peak in summer.
Lewis, who fosters kittens, named them Aster, Rowan, Daffodil and Cosmos. SPCA chief executive Andrea Midgen said kitten season placed a massive strain on resources and staff, as kittens require high levels of care before they could be adopted, and they relied heavily on volunteers.

As many of you know, Age Concern is a charity organisation that helps seniors in the Hutt Valley, Porirua and Wellington. We rely on donations to be able to achieve the work we do to ensure seniors are not left lonely, that they have groceries delivered, and are well taken care of and informed. Our… View moreAs many of you know, Age Concern is a charity organisation that helps seniors in the Hutt Valley, Porirua and Wellington. We rely on donations to be able to achieve the work we do to ensure seniors are not left lonely, that they have groceries delivered, and are well taken care of and informed. Our volunteers always work hard and make many sacrifices to reach out to older people across the Wellington Region.
We are extra proud of our volunteer team in 2020 as they stepped up during Covid-19 and ensured hundreds of seniors had someone to talk to, during and after, lockdown. They made thousands of phone calls and even delivered groceries to seniors who couldn’t get down to the supermarket. They are fantastic, and we wouldn’t be able to achieve all we do without them.
That’s why we want to say a big thank to them all this Christmas. We would love to show them how much they mean to us and to older people across the Region. Can you help us do this?
