Kia ora koutou, I am Tui Lewis and I represent the Hutt City Council on the Whaitua Te Whanganui-a-Tara Committee, set up by the Greater Wellington Regional Council to make recommendations for maintaining and improving our taonga – our fresh and coastal waters.

I am honoured to have the privilege of serving Te Awakarangi and to support the kaitiakitanga of our special environment with the Whaitua Te Whanganui-a-Tara committee. We are looking forward to working with you to maintain and improve the quality of the water in our catchments. Growing population is placing an immense pressure on our waste and stormwater pipes. We need to fix our infrastructure to leave a healthier catchment to our children, and fixing infrastructure is costly. These are big changes, and needs to reflect our communities’ views informed by good evidence and information to find solutions that are fair and equitable.

Come and talk to me about what we can do together. Connect with us to talk about what we can do together. You can reach us at whaitua@gw.govt.nz. To see what we have been doing visit our Facebook page, and to share what you value about our water and your solutions have your say by following the link below.

Regular water quality monitoring at the Tory St culvert has shown an increase in faecal coliforms (which can indicate the presence of wastewater) to levels that have triggered investigations by Wellington Water crews to determine the source of contamination.

The area is not a recreational swimming site, however signage will be placed as a precaution until testing indicates water quality has returned to safe levels. Sampling will also be undertaken at Oriental Bay and the Whairepo Lagoon as a precaution, however it is not expected that these areas will be impacted due to dilution.

Wellington Water's water quality monitoring programme enables rapid detection and response to contamination events. Response thresholds are deliberately set at precautionary levels in order to minimise public risk.

Updates on the situation will be provided on Wellington Water's website and social media.

Loud music among the Zoo animals late into the night

Wellington Zoo has an outdoor venue among the animal cages where live bands and DJs blare music late into the night. I can hear it very clearly from my home.

The Zoo is generally quiet from very early evening and through the night. The animals will be used to the dark and quiet at this time, where they get some respite from being caged entertainment. But every now and then the evening brings more human harassment in the form of fantastically loud music and often chattering or yelling humans, that subjects these animals to further stress, sometimes until after midnight.
The Zoo told me this is done to make money. It’s punishment on top of punishment for animals, dressed up as both fun and conservation. It makes my skin crawl hearing this in our neighbourhood.
If you’re confused about the conservation façade, read from the many experts and research to understand that Zoos are really just recreation. And not for the animals.
Why does Wellington Zoo need to make it even worse?
