Our waterways and all the fish and species that live in them are precious taonga, so we have set out to understand how they are valued and what should be done to provide the future we want for our water.

I have had the opportunity to work with some of you through my involvement with Forest & Bird Upper Hutt. I also chair the local group – Friends of the Hutt River. I am passionate about the health of our waterways that should be safe for people to enjoy and would like to see a thriving natural ecology in our waterways.
This job isn’t easy. We need to find solutions to fix our waste and stormwater networks. These are big changes, and needs to reflect our communities’ views informed by good evidence and information.

Connect with us to talk about what we can do together. You can reach us at whaitua@gw.govt.nz. To see what we have been doing visit our Facebook page, and to share what you value about our water and your solutions have your say by following the link below.

To keep you informed with what’s happening across the city, here’s an update on the major roadwork projects happening around the city that might mean your bus of choice across all routes is taking longer to get to you.

Brandon Street earthquake strengthening: There are multiple buildings along both sides of Brandon Street, between Featherston Street and Customhouse Quay currently undergoing renovations/earthquake strengthening. The road has been closed to ensure public safety and is due to re-open sometime in April 2020.

Wallace Street Omaroro Reservoir Pipelines Project - 5 Jan 2020 to Mid-2020: The Wright Street diversion is now 6 weeks into the construction of a new reservoir beneath Wallace Street. Routes 3, 18e, 27, 718, 726 and 770 are continuing to be diverted via Wright Street which will continue until the project has been completed in mid-2020.

Willis Street Wastewater Project - 20 December to end of March 2020

With the Willis Street wastewater project underway we would like to remind you that Routes 7, 17, 17e, 25, 29 and 29e will continue to be diverted northbound towards Lambton Quay via Ghuznee Street to Taranaki Street to Manners Street until work on the permanent installation of new pipes under Willis Street is completed at the end of March 2020.

We would like to thank Wellington City Council for working with us as we keep you informed about these roadwork projects, and you our customers for your patience as our Metlink buses continue to work hard to get you where you need to be whilst these diversions are in place.

The number of properties in Severn Street affected by the water outage has been reduced from 250 properties to 70 (between 15-77 Severn Street).
However, those left without water to their homes will have another significant wait until service can be restored – the estimated time of repair is at least 8 hours.

Two nights in a row without water is unacceptable and very disruptive. We’re sorry for the inconvenience that this has caused and understand that it’s just not on.

Replacing the aged water pipe is currently scheduled to begin in March 2020; we’re looking into what can be done to speed the process up.

Celebrate our amazing marine mammals this National Sea Week (29/2-8/3) with Project Jonah at Sustainability Trust

Together we’ll measure out a blue whale, compose whale songs, and practice saving a stranded whale (in this case Lionel, our inflatable friend!).

Project Jonah is a marine mammal welfare charity that exists for one simple reason – marine mammals desperately need our help. They are faced with many threats, including plastic pollution, fisheries by-catch, and climate change. Project Jonah’s work involves coordinating trained volunteers nationwide to help at whale strandings, as well as raising awareness of human impacts on these animals and marine education programmes.

This event will show how incredible these creatures are, and focus on raising awareness of issues facing them and some practical ways that we can help.

This is a koha-based event with all proceeds going to Project Jonah
