International Day of Older Persons is a day to celebrate all older people – to highlight the value of all older people and to promote dignity and respect. The 2018 international theme is “Celebrating Older Human Rights Champions“.

This year Age Concern New Zealand want all New Zealanders to sign up as Age Concern Dignity Champions and stand up for the human rights of older Kiwis.

“There is no excuse for elder abuse, says Stephanie Clare, Age Concern New Zealand Chief Executive. I am appalled that we are still having to deal with cases each day where older people are taken advantage of.

“Just because someone is older it doesn’t mean they are less valuable, have less purpose or should lose basic human rights, the right to make their own choices and respect from those around them.

“Of the cases we see, 75% of alleged abusers are family members, either adult children or partners of adult children and that needs to stop!

“So come on Kiwis we all have a part to play. You can take a stand against ageism and join me by signing up today!” says Stephanie.

An Age Concern Dignity Champion pledges to:
• Reject stereotypes and focus on the uniqueness of every individual
• Speak up when they hear people speaking negatively about growing old
• Have the courage to question practices they feel are disrespectful to older people
• Not patronise older people
• Be patient, polite and friendly
• Have zero tolerance for abuse or neglect
• Build relationships – they combat isolation and loneliness by getting to know the older people in their lives.

I was a bit taken aback that the fruit and vege department didn't seem aware of the needles contamination and then was told by a manager that the supplier they used was not one that had been identified as contaminated. The brand Countdown sells is Ti and I checked today that this was actually the first brand identified in Australia following the first needles complaint. Today Countdown in Auckland stopped Australian supplies after finding needles in their supply. Better safe than sorry for our families and in particular our kids.

The positive one: there are so many blossoms this year. It makes everything look wonderful and I especially love the kowhai. The negative one: jumping red lights seem to be on the increase - for example traffic turning right off of Hutt Road onto Onslow Road, the lights along Lambton Quay and buses seem to be offenders as well as cars. And the other day I was nearly bowled at the corner of Molesworth and Lambton Quay even though Kate had given me the green light to cross.

It’s your decision to stay as you are — or to do something different, attend this event, and apply what you learn and change your life.

On Sunday, 14th October at 10am, a generous amount of holy oil, blended with olive oil from the Holy Land will be given FREE OF CHARGE to everyone who attends.

This oil will serve as a point of contact, a tangible way for you to use your faith and connect with God.

We challenge you to come with your problems and see for yourself what God can do in your life.
