Gather 12pm at the seated area in front of the He Tohu gallery. Talk begins 12.10pm.
The final party to He Whakaputanga o te Rangatiratanga o Nu Tirani (The Declaration of Independence of New Zealand) was Te Wherowhero of Tainui, who signed on the 22nd of July 1839.
Rahui Papa will discuss the circumstances surrounding the signing by Te Wherowhero, the Tainui view of the Declaration, and subsequent events in Tainui and New Zealand history.
About the speaker: Rahui Papa (Tainui) grew up on and around his marae and papakāinga of Pōhara, in the Waikato. He has worked in broadcasting, teaching, and has served as a director and trustee on many boards. He is perhaps best known as an expert orator and a recognised authority on Waikato reo, tikanga, and tribal history.

‘Children don’t want fantasy, there’s no demand for it.’
When Eirlys Hunter finished her first Junior fiction manuscript in 1997, a publisher rejected it on the grounds that ‘children don’t want fantasy, there’s no demand for it.’ JK Rowling soon proved that publisher wrong, and since then there’s been an explosion in fiction for children that is set in worlds that diverge from the reality of their lived experience. Why is this?
In this informal talk Eirlys Hunter will discuss what fantasy is, and speculate on what fantasy can offer readers (and writers) that realism cannot.

Come and find out how at the Learning to Live Sustainably event at Khandallah Town Hall on Tuesday, 29 October 2019 from 7-9pm.
We have an array of speakers who will offer practical advce as to how you can you adopt more eco-friendly practices in your daily habits.
What does it mean to live a sustainable life? Put simply, it’s about using resources wisely: minimising waste, reducing your carbon emissions and making choices that can help rather than hinder the environment.
So how do you put that into practice? As we face the growing problems of climate change, rising sea levels, global warming and plastic pollution, it’s more important than ever for us to do as much as we can to preserve the planet.
Although these are big problems, we can tackle them in small steps – so long as enough of us commit to taking them.
Come Along.
