Smoke was also reported in the Hutt Valley and the Wellington coastal suburb of Miramar.

What you need to know:
- Fenz was alerted to the blaze at 11.04pm on Thursday, and the first crews arrived by about 11.10pm.
- About 7.15am Friday, Fire and Emergency NZ said eight crews were still working to bring the vegetation fire under control. Helicopters with monsoon buckets would also be working on Friday morning.
- The fire was burning over about 10ha in Whitireia Park, and people were asked to stay away from the area. No homes were at risk, Fenz said.
- Residents in Wellington’s northern suburbs woke to the sight of a red glow in the sky and the smell of smoke in the air.
- Commuters travelling into Wellington city from the north were also driving through heavy smoke over the motorway in the central Porirua area.
- Fenz said smoke was affecting a large part of Porirua, and the National Public Health Service had advised that people in an area where there was smoke should go inside, close the windows and doors and turn off air conditioning units. Anyone who had been exposed to the smoke and was feeling unwell should contact Healthline (0800 611 116) or ring their doctor for advice.

Beware of inhaling smoke:
People should avoid exposure to smoke if possible.
Smoke may irritate the eyes, nose, throat, and airways. Symptoms could include watery or sore eyes, dry or sore throat, sore nose, cough, tightness of the chest or difficulty breathing. In healthy people, most symptoms disappeared soon after exposure to smoke ended and did not cause long-term health problems. Smokers, the elderly, children, and those with heart disease, asthma or other lung disease were at the greatest risk of harm from smoke inhalation.

From 12:01am, Wednesday 17th January, Wellington, Porirua, Lower Hutt and Upper Hutt will move to level 2 water restrictions. All unattended watering systems will be banned, this includes household sprinklers and irrigation systems.

You will be able to water your garden by hand anytime, on any day, so long as you don’t leave your garden hose or watering device unattended.

This helps to limit water waste and helps reduce the risk of tighter water restrictions and further shortages.

Rain is forecast, but the amount expected is not enough to help the situation.

Having received this lovely hamper and put it all together in the lounge - I went to move it into the laundry (it's natural home) and it didn't fit!!

What is that old saying - measure twice before you buy anything off the internet!!

Anyway, I am putting it up for sale (original price $118) so it can be useful in a new home, I can buy one that fits and to save me from my husband's displeasure!!

Here is the blurb from the internet site, including dimensions, that I clearly didn't take any notice of!!

The shelf in this laundry basket offers additional space to arrange detergents or toiletries.
Convenient pull-out and removable liners. Each liner is equipped with a plastic bottom panel to prevent sagging. The hook-and-loop fastener, means you can effortlessly pull out and remove the liners, making it easy to transport them to the washing machine.

Tawa RSA Community Bowls for 2023-24 season

Our Tawa RSA is running a Community Bowls program this summer and we invite all members of the community to take part.

We invite you to take part by way of a work, family or community team. Would love to see you join us.

Our venue is Tawa Services Bowling Club, 89 Oxford Street Tawa.

Scheduled dates, all in 2024, are Wednesdays:

24 January, 7, 14, 21, & 28 February, 6, 13 (reserve day) March.
Play each evening is 1 game, starting 6.00pm and finishing by 7.20pm

The format is 3 players to a team. (Player rotation is welcome as people often have other engagements cropping up.) At least one player should be a ‘non regular’ bowler. We have a supply of bowls for those who need them.

Footwear needs to have flat soles, i.e., no heels.

There is a $15.00 entry fee per team ($5.00 per player) payable each game. Register teams at the clubrooms or by emailing tawa.rsa@xtra.co.nz.

We play this as a league. The format is ‘Bowls3five’ which is the same format as that shown on television’s Sky Sports channels in November/December each year. i.e., 2 bowls per player, per end. 2 sets of 5 ends, followed by a one end ‘tie-break’ if necessary.

A ‘power play’ in each set.

A light supper is served at completion of play.

Please note your diaries to register a team early in the New Year to allow us time to prepare a draw, order food etc.

Welcome to the second of this series of articles dedicated to helping you to downsize, declutter and rightsize your life, brought to you by Ryman Healthcare in conjunction with organising and decluttering expert Peter Walsh.

This time we are tackling one of the more challenging aspects of downsizing – what to do with gifts and heirlooms. Whether you need to free up space in your own home or are helping someone else to downsize, this is a task that can feel daunting and emotionally charged.

Although it might be tempting to box everything up and hide it away to deal with another day, that just passes the problem down the road to your future self or to your family.

Fortunately, there are ways to downsize gifts and heirlooms that honour and remember the past whilst enabling you to rightsize your life for the present day.
