Hi Neigbours,

I have decided to run the Auckland Marathon on my birthday next year. While I enjoy running, I have decided that this time I am also running for a good cause by helping to raise money for the Mental Health Foundation.

While I know that it's been tough for a lot of people this year, the foundation does excellent work and really does need our help. If you could take a moment and donate the cost of a cup of coffee, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks, Heaps

Join the rest of the motu on October 28 by taking part in our national earthquake drill and tsunami hīkoi, ShakeOut. Signing up only takes 2 minutes and when you do, you’ll be entered to win a personal emergency grab bag or civil defence wheelie bin kit from NZ Civil Defence.
ShakeOut takes place around the world to remind people of the right action to take during an earthquake:

DROP - down on your hands and knees. This protects you from falling but lets you move if you need to.

COVER - your head and neck (or entire body if possible) under a sturdy table or desk (if it is within a few steps of you). If there is no shelter nearby, cover your head and neck with your arms and hands.

HOLD - on to your shelter (or your position to protect your head and neck) until the shaking stops. If the shaking shifts your shelter around, move with it.

Head to www.shakeout.govt.nz... to sign up today and get involved!

I am a sweet dog looking for my forever home. I am looking for a very special home that can understand my quirks and needs. A home that can help me thrive and be the best companion I can be. My ideal home would be one that has had previous large dog experience and or greyhound. I walk beautifully on a lead but in saying that I would need a home that can handle me as I can be strong when I want. I have had a fair amount of training from my previous home but there is always room for more growth. I am super smart and a lover of all yummy foods so will pick up new things very quickly. I can be shy when meeting new people so I would love a quiet patient home that can read when I am not comfortable. A home with no children. I could live with an older settled male dog but in saying this I am used to having my own space. I am not suited to a home with cats or any small animals."

Manty of you will be familiar with our ongoing commentary about he three landfills located to the south of Brooklyn - between Brooklyn and Owhiro Bay. Two are privately run on (mostly) council (ie ratepayer) land. But the main one is the WCC run and managed Careys Gully/Southern Landfill. It resource consent runs out in 2025 and the council is going to the community seeking guidance and clarity here. There are five options ranging from: simply continuing with it to closing the landfill completely. I suspect most will reluctantly want the landfill to continue but now is an ideal opportunity to advocate for tighter operational controls - fitting with what we do in the twenty first century - and then look to the other two landfills where there Resource Consents will be coming up for review and renewal in the next year or so.
