The strike is the first time all teachers in the compulsory schooling sector have taken strike action simultaneously.

The teachers, who are jointly represented by primary and secondary teachers' unions NZEI Te Riu Roa and PPTA, voted to strike after four days of talks with the Ministry of Education failed to result in an offer. Read more here.

Three new playgrounds are under construction, reflecting the Councilโ€™s commitment to improved facilities for children.

Pollard Park's foundation pads have been laid and the first โ€˜acornโ€™ pods have been installed. Completion is only a month away. The equipment from Pollard Park is being โ€˜upcycledโ€™ for this site and will have a farm-style theme.

A new playground at Mark Smith Reserve, on the Boulevard Park on Taylor subdivision, is expected to be open by late June.

Construction of the new Renwick Domain playground is also progressing too, and expected to be opened by mid-June.
