A complex low system covers the North Island and Tasman Sea, directing a moist easterly flow and rain across central New Zealand. This flow is expected to tend more southerly on Wednesday, easing the rain about central areas.

The heaviest falls are expected today (Tuesday) about eastern Marlborough south of Cape Campbell and about the eastern hills and south coast of Wellington, and a Heavy Rain Warning is still in force for these areas.

This Watch is for the possibility that the rainfall accumulations may approach warning amounts about Canterbury north of the Waimakariri river, especially about the hill country.

People are advised to keep up to date with the latest forecasts in case this Watch is upgraded to a full Warning or other areas are added.

Heavy Rain Watch
Area: Canterbury north of the Waimakariri river, especially about the foothills
Valid: 21 hours from 9:00am Tuesday to 6:00am Wednesday
Forecast: Periods of rain, with heavier falls this evening and overnight. Rainfall accumulations may approach warning criteria.
