Local authorities plan to come down hard on people driving vehicles around the sand dunes along the Waimakariri coast.

District council community projects officer Mike Kwant says people are still flouting the rules, despite the council's best intentions.

"We continue to be disappointed by the number of vehicle owners driving in the sand dunes of our beaches, especially Pines Beach.

"We have also suffered ongoing vandalism of fences put in place to protect both this natural environment and the safety and enjoyment of visitors," he says.

The Fernside Community Hall has become the latest place in North Canterbury to have an defibrillator installed thanks to the fundraising efforts of its local school's parent-teacher association.

Fernside School PTA president Natasha Pagan says it took several years to raise the close to $6000 needed for the community's new automated external defibrillator, so it was exciting to finally get it.

"We noticed there was a need for the defibrillator in the community, as the nearest one is [5 kilometres away] in Rangiora," she says.

"We feel very privileged that we were able to provide something so life-changing in our community."

A North Canterbury woman has been left gutted by an anonymous note criticising her valid use of a mobility permit.

It's the second such note to be left on a Rangiora family's car within two months.

Reality Bites Cafe owner Karl Horwarth says he found the "very upset" woman, who was almost in tears, as he was leaving the cafe last week.

Horwarth, who uses a wheelchair himself, said the woman had a mobility permit for a disability that was not necessarily obvious.

"I had a quick chat to her and told her not to get upset as I get notes like that all the time."

CEMETERIES

Karen from Rangiora

While sitting waiting for my daughter to come out of school i was parked outside the Cemetery on Eastbelt next door to the high school, i am appalled at the state of it, headstones down and damaged, grass is knee high, the fence out the front looks tacky. This is so disrespectful.

Creating safer communities means ensuring that no one lives in fear of harm on the streets or in their own home.

For the month of November, we want to raise awareness for all forms including family harm, elder and child abuse, sexual assault, gang violence, and more.

Perhaps sign-up to volunteer at a women’s refuge this month or work with the Police in your area to host an info night on how to identify elder abuse in your community.

Share your photos and experiences with us on social media or send us an email so we can see what you got up to!
