Oxford Bird Rescue has seen more than its fair share of little owls this season, with a record-breaking 16 of the birds through its doors since December.

Owner Scott Bowman, who runs the rescue operation with wife Tracey, says there were several reasons for the increase this year, with the weather possibly playing a part.

Quite a few had fledged but could not find enough food, while another was picked up from a newly-built subdivision in Rangiora.

Canterbury District Health Board’s Community and Public Health unit have issued a health warning after potentially toxic blue-green algae (benthic cyanobacteria) were found in the Ashley / Rakahuri River near the Rangiora-Loburn Bridge.

There are also other access points along the Ashley / Rakahuri River that may have cyanobacteria present and people are advised to check for the presence of cyanobacteria and avoid contact.

People and animals, particularly dogs, should avoid the area of the Ashley / Rakahuri River near the Rangiora-Loburn Bridge until the health warning has been lifted.

“Exposure may cause skin rashes, nausea, stomach cramps, tingling and numbness around the mouth and fingertips,” Dr Pink says.

“If you experience any of these symptoms, visit your doctor immediately, also let your doctor know if you’ve had contact with dark brown/black algal mats or water in this area.”

Hi neighbours,

Many people setting up paddling pools for their children this summer will be breaking the law - are you one of them?

Any pool, fixed or portable, deeper than 400mm is now subject to safety provisions under the Building Act, meaning there a quite a few rules you probably aren't even aware of.

For example, do you have a 1.2-metre fixed childproof fence with a self-closing gate opening outwards?

What are your thoughts on paddling pool safety? If faced with an inspection, would your pool set-up pass? Do you think all these rules are essential? What are your tips for setting up a paddling pool safely?

Why Choose Prenatal Yoga?
Pregnancy is the 9 month period where the body goes through the most changes in such a short time that the woman is predominantly in a state of introspection. It's a time where she is questioning her choices around keeping herself physically, mentally and emotionally well for the sake of baby. From a Yoga perspective it is the most feminine physical state she can be in and some say the closest a woman can become enlightened for several reasons: 1) she is immersed in the creation process and can quietly tune into this on the inner levels. 2) she will enter a state of complete surrender in the birthing process. 3) she is embarking on an introspective journey to discover who she is.
At this time she can also become very conscious of the traits of her unborn child and may even connect with her/him on the inner levels. Attending Pregnancy Yoga at this time helps her on her introspective journey and gives her confidence to listen to the wise inner voice that becomes "mother's intuition". Prenatal Yoga will help her develop her intuition through breathing techniques and sensing into each asana (pose) to use her breath as a guide to focus and later surrender to the process. Sound in combination with the breath may also be used. The classes will strengthen, stretch and support her. It's also a beautiful time to develop a community of mothers and sometimes these groups stay together for years to come.

Mondays 7-8pm starting on 14 January, upstairs in the old Rangiora Hospital (white building)

Yoga for Everybody is 5:45pm-6:45pm Mondays, 12:10-12:50 on Tuesday/Thursday and 6:45-7:45 on Wednesdays
