In our own backyard, our youngest kids are going without the basics. Unlike schools, early childhood centres don’t have a nationwide support programme. Children under 5 are at the most crucial age for brain development.

But KidsCan is helping. Since October they've been delivering five fresh meals a week to 25 early childhood centres, and kitting out kids with new raincoats and shoes. They want to extend the programme, so no one misses out on learning.

KidsCan, Neighbourly and Stuff have partnered up to raise enough money to feed and clothe 1000 more children under five. To support a child, sign up at KidsCan.org.nz.

The Community and Public Health team from Canterbury District Health Board have issued a health warning after potentially toxic blue-green algae (benthic cyanobacteria) were found in the Otukaikino/Waimakariri confluence near the SH1 and Main North Road bridges.

People and animals, particularly dogs, should avoid the area of the Waimakariri River near SH1 and Main North Road bridges until the health warning has been lifted.

Dr Alistair Humphrey, Canterbury Medical Officer of Health, says the algae look like dark brown to black mats and can produce toxins harmful to people and animals.

“Exposure may cause skin rashes, nausea, stomach cramps, tingling and numbness around the mouth and fingertips,” Dr Humphrey says.

“If you experience any of these symptoms, visit your doctor immediately, also let your doctor know if you’ve had contact with dark brown/black algal mats or water in this area.” Read more here

"[Cows] are so much like us — they feel happiness, sadness, loneliness, fear and love," she said. "They make friends, enemies, and mourn the loss of their loved ones just like us, yet they are one of the most exploited creatures on earth," she says.

My neighbour takes all the water for irrigation and leaves us without enough to make a cuppa sometimes so I had to sell my brand new state of the art automatic washer as it used too much water that we didnt have. I bought a new ( Chinese) twin tub but its fallen apart not up to the job (but better than a rock in a river I suppose in China) so I am wanting to buy an old NZ made one that actually works rather than this new one that just drains all the water out of the washer part every time you spin anything. Its a fault and Haier want more than I paid to fix it so hence the search for an " oldie but goodie" to save the day where I can do the washing in two bowl fulls rather than hundreds of litres ( and hours) with a smart modern one as they are no good as they detect not enough water comng in and shut down and I would come back an hour later expecting it to be done to find it not even started. This hot dry period means I have to use just the two washing up bowl fulls again and I just lost that as this machine's faulty action spun all the water out of the washer instead of the spinner. I curse my damned neighbour everytime I have to do the washing by hand Grrrr!! Can anyone help please?
