New Zealanders need to almost halve their number of car trips to satisfactorily improve our health and wellbeing, a new report claims.

The University of Otago report, Turning the Tide - from Cars to Active Transport, has recommended the Government put targets and legislation in place to reduce car use in urban centres from 84 per cent of trips to 45 per cent by 2050.

The report claims two-thirds of car trips made for commuting between 2015 and 2017 were within a comfortable cycling distance (five kilometres or less), while one-third were within a reasonable walking distance (2km or less).

‘The children are our future.’ It’s a well-loved cliché around the world because it’s absolutely true. The hopes and dreams we have for our communities are only as strong as the children and young people who continue to believe in them long after we’re gone.

This month is all about supporting our young people, to encourage and empower them to not only be the change-makers and community builders of tomorrow but also the best versions of themselves. To listen to their perspective and remember that it’s not just about what we can teach them, but what lessons they can teach us. After all, the recipe for creating healthy, happy children includes a lot of the same ingredients for building safer, more resilient and connected communities.

Want to share your thoughts?

Let us know how you’re supporting young people in your communities this month by tagging us in your posts + using the following hashtag so we can see what you get up to:

Flaxton resident Michael Blackwell has walked across the waterway at least twice a day for the past 35 years, and noticed the water quality slowly getting worse.

Blackwell said he decided to put his hand up to try to improve the situation, rather than just complain about it.

Broken electronics

Lee from Swannanoa - Ohoka

Hi everyone

A while back someone posted on here asking for old / broken electronic stuff.

Does anyone remember who was asking for it as we have a broken 60 inch TV available for them to take away, otherwise it will be taken to the dump. :-(

Thanks
