ECan North Canterbury zone manager Andrew Arps said the spill was still being investigated.
"We have received information about the oil in the waterway and had an officer on site on Tuesday. We have identified the source of the spill, and are continuing to work closely with WDC to investigate what happened and the parties concerned."

The WHoW Charitable Trust wants to open whitewater, surf and cable wakeboard parks along the Kaiapoi River in the residential red zone.

The WHoW Charitable Trust wants to open whitewater, surf and cable wakeboard parks along the Kaiapoi River in the residential red zone.
The project was initially earmarked for Christchurch's red zone, but trust spokesman Scott Kotoul said Kaiapoi's red zone was "ready to go" with new developments now.
