Woodend School is set to get a temporary new classroom in time for the new school year.
Ministry of Education spokesperson Sandra Orr said the ministry has been working with the school’s board of trustees on options to address the school’s growing school roll.
An offsite manufactured classroom will be delivered to Woodend School in time for term one as a temporary solution, she said.
In July, the ministry announced the school’s proposed building project was on hold, but subsequently met with the school to discuss alternative arrangements.
It followed a review of 352 school building projects in a bid to save $2 billion.
Woodend School principal Andrew Retallick said it has been a ‘‘frustrating’’ process
But he is pleased the ministry is starting to address to the school’s concerns.
The temporary classroom will provide some relief, but with the school roll set to pass 600 next year at least two new classrooms will be needed.
‘‘We still need to wait until July to know whether we will get any new permanent buildings,’’ he said.
‘‘It is frustrating because we want to start planning now, but they (the ministry) are saying there’s limited money, so we can’t start until we are on the list for roll growth.’’
Retallick said 124 new students were enrolled during this school year, including 60 new entrants.
‘‘The hardest ones to plan for are the across age groups enrolments, because you set your classrooms knowing it could change by one or two children.’’
He said the ministry had been receptive to the school’s concerns and had ensured the school had the right staffing levels to allow for next year’s growth.
Woodend School’s growth has been on the back of the booming Ravenswood subdivision.
A large new 1500-home subdivision has been proposed at nearby Waikuku as part of the Government’s Fast-track Approvals Bill, which will put pressure on local schools if it goes ahead.
Retallick said a rethink of the local school network was needed as Woodend School and neighbouring Pegasus Bay School had limited capacity for growth.
The Woodend School board of trustees has been contacted for comment.

Following recent media coverage on the need to test drinking water from private wells, readers have been asking how they go about it.
The question of whether Environment Canterbury (ECan) should run regionwide events to educate private well owners on the risks, including nitrates and E.Coli, caused plenty of debate at a recent council meeting.
Former chairperson Peter Scott said the question of drinking water quality is the ‘‘most emotional subject’’ in Canterbury.
Greenpeace has been running similar water testing events in Canterbury in recent years.
But several councillors expressed concern a one-off test will not give ‘‘good information’’, as drinking water needs to be tested regularly.
The Waimakariri district has the highest number of lifestyle blocks in the country, with many drinking water from private wells.
ECan and Waimakariri District Council staff refer private well owners to the website of water regulator, Taumata Arowai.
There are 10 accredited laboratories in Canterbury.
‘‘Our advice would be to use one of those registered laboratories,’’ an ECan spokesperson said.
‘‘The webpage lists phone numbers for the laboratories, so in terms of what is involved, the best idea would be to call and ask how best to submit a water sample, and they will advise.’’
The regional council regularly monitors selected private wells across the region to determine trends, but concerns have been expressed the testing is not wide enough.
Taumata Arowai says all registered drinking water suppliers must use an accredited laboratory to ‘‘analyse source water, raw water and drinking water as part of any monitoring requirements’’.
‘‘If test results indicate drinking water does not comply with the drinking water standards or compliance rules, accredited laboratories will notify Taumata Arowai and the drinking water supplier as soon as practicable.’’
The Ministry of Health uses World Health Organisation standards to determine a maximum acceptable value of nitrates in drinking water of 11.3 mg/L.
When drinking water exceeds half of the maximum acceptable value, well owners are advised to regular monitor their drinking water.
For more information, go to taumataarowai.govt.nz/for-water-suppliers/using-an-accredited-laboratory-to-test-your-drinking-water/
Those on council drinking water supplies should contact their local council if they have any concerns.

- One woman said she thought she was having a heart attack after using one of the products which smelt of diesel.
- One customer said she’d purchased the quilt covers and said they smelled like gas. Another mum said hers did not have that smell but claimed her son developed a rash that only went away when he stopped using the product.
- The product is no longer available for purchase on the Kmart website.
