An Eyrewell irrigation lake has been transformed into an attractive recreational resort with riparian planting increasing biodiversity and providing habitat for native birds.

Geoff and Rochelle Spark started work on the dam in 2010 and while the main purpose of the lake was irrigation, recreation also played an important role in the design process.

Witnessing a wide range of birds return to the area, along with the surprise growth of bulrushes and grasses along the lake edge has been another positive.

Spark and his family spend much of their free time over the summer months at the lake and enjoy entertaining friends at the picturesque spot. They've also hosted the NZ under 21 kayaking team for practice sessions and will host the Oxman half ironman in December.

Hi everyone,

This is just an observation and not a challenge, after reading the comments on the Poll for Daylight Saving.

If we no longer eat meat of any kind, drink animal milk or use any of the bi products of animal milk -

What will happen to the animals who supply all of this?

Farmers of all kinds can't and, I expect, won't want to breed, keep, house, whatever they do at the moment, any of these non-productive animals and birds.

So ........

What is going to happen to all the cows, sheep, pigs, deer, chickens, turkeys, ducks etc etc?

Do we just wipe out all of the above?

We can't set them free. There won't be enough land because I expect farmers will have to go back to growing grain etc.

Is there a logical, calm, level-headed, answer to all of this?

Because the next thing may be that the grain we eat is full of chemicals and will also cause many illnesses and death via diseases.

Will people then start arguing for the grain to be monitored or whatever?

A charity car rally has raised $32,000 for children's mental health research and the development of an app designed to help parents support their children's well-being.

The Avis Budget Group Cure Kids 1000 hit the road on Red Nose Day with nine teams driving in convoy from Christchurch, through the North Canterbury back roads to Hanmer Springs, and back again to raise vital funds for a new app called Kakano.

Bruce Vincer, general manager, New Zealand Avis Budget Group, says his colleague, Rodney Swinney, wanted to organise a fun way to raise money for Cure Kids and came up with the idea of a charity car rally. He says "Mental health is a serious issue in our society, and it is important our young people are able to get the help and support they need."

Hi neighbours - it was introduced to reduce the "significant financial pressure" on Kiwi families, but so far only about one in four eligible schools have signed up to the Government scheme to replace voluntary donations.

Under the draft Education Amendment Bill, decile 1-7 state and state-integrated schools can opt to receive a payment of $150 per student, per year if they agree not to ask parents or caregivers for donations.

But as of last week, with just over a month to go until boards of trustees need to register, only 471 out of 1749 schools had told the Ministry of Education that they intend to sign up to the initiative.

In Canterbury, Shirley Boys' High School has rejected the discretionary grants, with headmaster John Laurenson saying its co-curriculum programme "would have to cease" if it took up the Government's offer.
