Famous in North Canterbury, the little German owl turned up at Oxford Bird Rescue in a bad way back in 2016 – and changed the lives of carers Scott and Tracey Bowman forever.
Choking on his emotions, Scott recounted how the plucky owl had fought back against the odds to become a part of their family.
Oscar did not wake up last week after he was administered anaesthetic for ongoing eye issues.
With hundreds of messages from around New Zealand and the world the couple were taking comfort that their little owl had made a difference.
“He really was a special little guy.”

We're looking into how some common claims about NZ stack up and would be interested in your thoughts on whether New Regent Street in Christchurch deserves its title of 'NZ's most beautiful street'. Do you think it is the best-looking street in the country? Or is there another street you think is more beautiful? Please put 'NFP' (not for publication) in your comment if you do not want it included in an article. Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts.

Kelly Jeffs began making meals in her Kaiapoi kitchen eight weeks ago to use up any pantry items she did not want to waste, but the “insane” response she got when she offered to give the meals away on a Facebook community page told her more needed to be done.
“I didn’t realise so many people needed help. It’s not just people on lower incomes.”
She set up Kai for Kaiapoi North Canterbury last week – a self-funded venture to help what she said was a growing need in low and middle income families struggling to feed themselves or their families.
