Last election 43% of eligible voters voted, let’s increase that!
We’d love to chat to anyone who is passionate about local matters and wants to encourage people to stand for Council. Take Ezekiel for example, they are championing addressing climate change. What would you say? Perhaps it’s the environment, infrastructure, local economy or accessibility?
I’m interested, tell me more you say! We want to create pictures like this one of Ezekiel. For that we’d need to photograph you and for you to tell us what you’re passionate about. We’d need to get you to sign a release form so we can use that photo too. We’d use that information on billboards around the city and across our other channels like social media and newsletters.
Still keen? Please email askus@uhcc.govt.nz and we’ll get the conversation started.

"I used to avoid posting photos where I had accidentally captured a nictitating membrane - I thought they looked like weird sausage-skin sideways eyelids. Then I read that they are amazing built-in bird goggles, so the bird can blink and still see, or even shutter their eyes in extreme conditions to protect their eyes while flying or diving. Apparently we used to have them too - the pink blob in the inner corner of our eyes is a vestigial membrane. I suppose we evolved out of needing them - still they might have been handy the other day when I was trying to take photos on the beach during a gale. Pūkeko/purple swamphen (Porphyrio melanotus) at Waimanu Lagoon."

It has been said that the flu is more dangerous/damaging/ easier to transmit than the Omicron variant of Covid 19.
The flu jab is available in NZ and is usually highly effective in preventing people from getting the flu or passing it on. But it is currently not compulsory though is free to people over a certain age or people with certain health conditions and involved in certain professions.
One of the current issues is that many people connected with DHBs in NZ ( nurses, doctors etc) are not getting the flu jab. In the Wellington region overall the number of such people not vaccinated against the flu is over 40%. The main reason given for not getting a simple, safe (to a very high degree) and lightening quick jab that has been around for over 20 years, is TIME.
Unvaccinated medical personnel not only are subject to getting influenza but they can pass the flu onto patients whose health is already compromised. And the other aspect is that the medical profession is critically short of staff and a bout of influenza will compound the shortages with flu ridden absentees from the workforce.
So should time for a jab be made available for the health profession? Should time and a jab be mandated like Covid vaccinations were?
