There is still a lot of algae in the river at this site, but the composition has changed. Most of the algae is a species of diatom – slimy but harmless. The close-up below shows a rock that is mostly covered by the diatom species – it’s yellowy/green and bumpy in appearance. You can also see a couple of patches of Phormidium or toxic algae. In the other picture you can clearly see small patches of toxic algae (the dark brown/black patches) amongst large patches of diatom growth.
It’s safe to use the river, but please remain cautious if you are taking your dog down there and make sure they don’t eat anything suspicious (even a small amount of toxic algae can be lethal if they eat it).
On the western side of the region, there is a water quality warning in place for Porirua Harbour at the Rowing Club. The latest sample recorded high bacterial counts which means the site is currently unsafe for swimming. This may have been due to recent rain in the area – rainfall flushes contaminants from land into waterways and we advise you not to swim for at least two days after rainfall, even if a site generally has good water quality.
Don't forget to keep up-to-date with the latest water quality warnings by visiting our interactive water quality map at bit.ly...

We rehearse in Upper Hutt and work with children 4+ through to teens. There are no auditions to join the Major Minors and there are 5 year long scholarships currently available.
Our first rehearsal for 2017 is on Sunday 29 January at The Spot, in Upper Hutt.
Behind the scenes are qualified musicians who run the choir voluntarily and have lots of experience working with developing voices.
We also have an auditioned extension group for more musically experienced/capable singers - The Harmonic Minors. This group performs on their own, gives vocal assistance to the Major Minors and provides leadership opportunities working with the younger children. Auditions are being held on Sunday 29 January at 4pm after the Major Minors rehearsal
Outdoor performances are planned for local destinations this year and we will be defending the Challenge Cup in the under 18 Choir section of the Hutt Valley Performing Arts Competitions in July....again! Concerts are also planned locally and further afield.
For more details check out majorminors.instantencore.com , email us on hvkidschoir@gmail.com or give us a call.

Sometimes we get caught up in the Christmas rush, and don’t take time to think about people who may be experiencing a much quieter holiday season. Contact with older people can help families to connect with what Christmas is really about, and it’s a great time to explore memories and think about traditions.
Age Concern New Zealand will posting 5 tips leading up to Christmas on how you can connect with your older neighbours this Holiday Season.
1. Invite your older neighbour to share a meal or a cup of tea
Christmas can be a tough time for older people, especially those who live alone. Invite your older neighbour over for a meal this holiday season. This will give you a chance to build a relationship with them.

Not that that’s likely because, following our inspection of the foundations, all appears to be solid as a rock!
The work, done by GW’s Parks Department along with a team of specialist engineers, was undertaken as part of our dam safety assurance programme.

The inspection is entirely precautionary.
We work with specialist engineers at Dam Safety Intelligence Ltd. to inspect the dam routinely as part of a safety assurance programme, and revisit it after any unusual events, such as the earthquake and flood event last month. Engineers tell us there are no safety issues with the dam wall.
We are preparing the area for geo-technical engineers to check the ongoing strength of the rock that the dam is built on and the connection with the abutments. People using the track will see we’ve removed some of the vegetation and soil around the rock so the engineers can do a thorough assessment.
We are looking to reactivate the control valves and reduce the water level behind the dam.
This is an historic site and a very popular walking track. We want to make sure it remains safe for the community and people can keep enjoying it.

Whether drugs was the issue or not, this woman should not have been killed by these people and I hope justice will come to the perpetrators - though real justice is seldom if ever, meted out in NZ.
Of course the police know a whole lot more than they are letting on and I believe they will make arrests soon.
