Barbershop chorus to sing for hospice - tickets on sale now

A local male barbershop chorus that regularly competes in America is busy honing a repertoire for a pre-Christmas charity performance in Lower Hutt.

Vocal FX President Jared Lee says the December 2 concert for Te Omanga Hospice and the community work of Rotary Hutt Valley will feature songs they performed to recently win a Pan-Pacific title in Sydney against barbershop choruses from Japan, Australia and around the Pacific.

Lee says Vocal FX draws its 18-35 year-old members from all over the Hutt Valley and Wellington. True to barbershop's 1870s (and 1930s revival) roots, it's mainly about getting together with others who love to sing a cappella, where the voice is the only instrument.

They perform songs of those original black southern quartets, with flexing of melody to produce wonderful harmonies in 'swipes' and 'snakes'.

"But we also do a New Zealand take on things, and we make quite a splash when we compete in America. We bring in songs from Samoa and other Pacific Islands, R & B, fun show songs and so on.

"Our diversity and local flavour is something close to our heart," Lee says.

And this is not a choir that stands still. "There can be a lot of dancing and movement," Lee says. "It's all about the total performance, not the voices alone."

Launched in 2003 with less than a dozen members, Vocal FX now has up to 50 regulars and up to 40 have made four trips to the USA in the last decade to compete against the cream of barbershop choruses from around the world. The Hutt concert is the last before Vocal FX begins preparations for competing in Orlando, Florida in 2018.

There's extra reason for sports fans to tune in for the Hutt concert. Two polo shirts signed by Olympic rowers Eric Murray and Hamish Bond will be raffled on the night.

* Vocal FX Charity Concert for Te Omanga Hospice, Saturday 2 December, Hutt City Church, Marsden St, 6.30pm. Tickets $25, ph or text 027 484 8892, email jonewlove8@gmail.comor go to Eventfinda.co.nz

Working from home can be a challenge so ensuring you have a functional work space goes a long way towards increasing productivity and avoiding distractions.

Whether you work from home full-time like me, split your time between the office and home, or simply need a space for personal admin, focus on creating a space that’s functional yet inviting.

DESIGN A HOME OFFICE THAT WORKS FOR YOU

Creating an effective home office starts with identifying the right room or space in your house.

While most of us dream of a large custom designed office to work from in, don’t be overly concerned with the size of your space. Instead focus more on working with what you have. That may be converting a spare room into an office, or utilising a nook in your living room.

One day we plan on building a studio office in our backyard to run my business from, but for now, it’s a case of working with what we have. In our small home that meant converting an oversized bedroom into a multi-purpose room.

Personally for me to be productive, I need a light, calming space, one free of distractions to maximise inspiration and creative thinking. I gave the once dark bedroom a mini makeover by painting the walls in a fresh, crisp white colour - Dulux Okarito.

Choosing the right desk is about identifying how much space you need to work from. I don’t need a large desktop, prefering one that is simple in design. I sourced this one from Freedom Furniture for $250.00, keeping only my essential items on display.

I find I get bored with interiors easily and like to keep the space fresh by changing art and décor around me. Surround yourself with things you love, place a rug under your feet for the cooler months and add life to your office with plants.

Don’t forget about creating a relaxing space in your home office too, which can be as simple as adding an arcmchair. I like to have somewhere comfy to sit when I’m reviewing documents. Relocating my hanging chair from ico traders to sit in the window near my desk gives me the chance to get away from the desk, while still completing work.

LIGHTING

Good natural lighting is important. A well lit space not only helps lift your mood but also assists productivity. When converting the bedroom I reorientated the layout to place my desk near a large window.

Additionally, look to add a desk lamp for late afternoon and evening work as overhead lights won’t suffice.

ORGANISATIONAL SOLUTIONS

There’s nothing like sitting down to an organised desk to jump start your day.

A clean and tidy desk allows you to focus on the task at hand and keep your mind clear.

Too often our home office becomes a dumping space with clutter piling up. Create effective organisation and storage solutions while maximising the desk area. I like a clear and tidy desktop so I utilise a locker cabinet underneath my desk to store and access files I regularly need.

For all remaining paper work or receipts, I file and archive these to well organised digital folders with back ups to the cloud.

To keep clutter at bay, get into the habit of once a week clean out - sorting through the clutter. I do this each Friday so when the new week rolls around on Monday I can get stuck into my work and not be distracted by mess.

Civil Defence sent out a nationwide emergency alert to our cell phones this evening, but if you didn’t get the alert, you’re not alone.

Only about a third of phones will have received the emergency alert.

There are several reasons why your phone may not have received it:
1. Many older phones will not be capable of recieving the alert. To check if your phone is capable.
2. Your phone needs to have the latest software. Go into your settings to check if you have an update available.
3. You need to have the setting for emergency alerts on your phone turned on. On iPhones, go into Settings, Notifications, then at the bottom there will be a toggle for ‘Emergency Alerts.” Switch this on.
On Android phones, some may not have this option or it may be in a different location. Generally you will find it by going into your messages, opening Settings from there, and finding something which says ‘Cell Broadcast’ or something along the lines of ‘Emergency Broadcasts.’ Turn this on.
4. You may have an imported/overseas phone. If you didn’t buy your phone from a local provider in NZ (e.g. Spark, Vodafone, Skinny, Apple NZ etc) it may be an import which likely won’t be able to receive the emergency alerts.
What are Emergency Mobile Alerts?
Emergency Mobile Alerts are messages about emergencies sent by authorised emergency agencies to mobile phones enabled to receive Emergency Mobile Alerts. They can be targeted to areas affected by serious hazards.
If your phone is on, capable and inside the targeted area, you should get the alerts. You don’t have to download an app or subscribe to a service, just ensure your phone is capable and updated.
Emergency Mobile Alert is an additional channel to help keep people safe if there is an emergency. It does not replace other emergency alerts. If you feel your life is in danger, don’t wait for an official warning. Take immediate action.
How does Emergency Mobile Alert work?
Emergency Mobile Alert uses a dedicated signal, so it’s not affected by network congestion. This can make Emergency Mobile Alert more reliable in an emergency when mobile phone traffic or people accessing websites could overload the network.
The alert will be broadcast to areas affected by serious hazards for a set period of time. Any capable phone entering this area during the broadcast period will receive the alert.
It is expected around one third of phones will initially be able to receive the alerts. This number is expected to rise substantially over time as people replace their phones with newer models. Emergency Mobile Alert capable phones should work on all mobile networks in New Zealand.
