Eddie Jones is right when he talks of NZ being affected as a country by the result of the Bledisloe Cup.

The All Blacks walloped Australia in Melbourne last Saturday to retain the biggest cup (size wise) in world sport.

And will this save the Labour-Greens Government from losing its ruling position at the political pools in October?

Rugby achievements have been a factor in the past and with 84,000 people viewing the contest live in Melbourne ( 40% of them AB supporters) and many millions watching on TV, the result was a boost for the the struggling current Government of NZ.

Jones, the Australian team coach. was not joking but it may be too late if the ABs also win the Webb Ellis Rugby World Cup in France on October 28 with the final coming two weeks too late before election day.

Trentham-Heretaunga will have two new cafes available to the general public opening their doors in a couple of weeks or so.

One will be in the large innovative Classic Cars Display building off Alexander Road in the commercial area in Trentham and the other will be in the developing Blue Mountains Campus on the ground floor of the Buddle Building. This cafe in Ward Street will have a partial garden setting.

So its going to be from scant pickings in cafes in these suburbs to a glut.

On Sunday evening Sweden played South Africa in the FIFA Women's World Cup. It seemed hard to fathom how come Sweden had so many more visable fans at the match at Wellington Regional Stadium than did SA

Afterall there are thousands of former South Africans living in the Wellington region and only a handful of Swedes.

The spectators ambled past me in my volunteering role. Apparantly some 19,000 turned up - many if them children of all ages.

Then I looked at the South African players and coach and they were a complete contrast to that of the Swedish team. And without going into details therein may lie the reason for much less fanfare given by locals to one of the sides in a closely contested game with the heavily favoured Swedes winning 2-1 with rheir secong goal coming in the last few minutes of play. The SA team had played well above its ranking and deserved a lot of credit.

The weather too did not favour the SA side. Cold and wet.

Norway has 5÷6 million people and is the furthest north one can find a country with a significant population. NZ has 5-6 million and is furthest south.

The two countries clashed in the first of the womens FIFA world cup 2023 and against all odds winless NZ won over the highly rated Norweigans.

It was an outstanding, astonishing display by the NZ women.

It should mean a sellout crowd at Wellington Stadium next Tuesday when NZ meets the Phillipines - a side rated below our ranking.
I'll be there as a volunteer to say hi/ ki ora.
