Kenny was not quite the trailblazer as portrayed as that merit goes to another American super guard Clyde ( The Glide) Huntley who preceded Kenny by a year.
The clashes that Kenny and Clyde had in playing for rival clubs were scintillating and legendary and Kenny not always played the better.
Always sketched in my mind was the famous triple time 3 pointer for Wellington Saints to beat Auckland in the NBL final at the Show Grounds stadium. McFadden rose towards the stadium roof and shot from way out with Frank Mulvihill providing a telling screen, just as the full time buzzer sounded.
The Sunday Times held up its entire production so I could hurriedly phone in over 2000 words with no notes on this "game of the century".
The paper left out my byline in error but I did get the NZ basketball writer of the year prize largely because of the review.
Kenny retired from the NBL a winner and could have easily coached the NZ men's ( or women's) teams at international level but he decided to keep local his lifestyle and loyalties. The likes of Huntley and Kenny should have won the lottery of selection for NBA (American) basketball but instead claimed and retained fame by being superstars in the NZ environment.

So I made enquiries. It would cost $4.50 per bun as well as $13.50 for courier and handling fees for a dozen.
I looked for alternatives not wanting just any hc bun for this special time of the year. And came up with the bakery in Waiwhetu Road, Lower Hutt.
If German baking skills is the key, this was the perfect double because this Lower Hutt bakery has Germany written all over it.
And so for a car drive and $2.50 each we got our hot cross buns this morning. Because they sell out fast each day, had to be at the shop by 9am but it was all worthwhile. Delicious. Main ingredience sour dough bread, lovely richly spiced and superbly glazed.
The Hutt Valley has its own "best hot cross buns in the nation" and at almost half the price.

However on my visit I was sad and disheartened to see her hers and many other headstones covered in moss/lichen. It was raining lightly so I used my fingers to rub away at the moss/lichen which came off ok. When the weather clears I'm going back with hot soapy water and a toothbrush to finish cleaning it. 😇 Can I please suggest if anyone hasn't been to visit a loved one @ Taita Cemetery please do so, and help out by cleaning their headstone and perhaps the neighbouring ones. No tools are required, just water and a cloth and/or an old toothbrush.
Picture below shows moss/lichen.

We can thank Pete Seeger for the song and Louise Thomas for the picture, and description of a black fronted tern.
"Continuing on with the rare terns that have been randomly turning (terning) up on the Kāpiti Coast, this is a juvenile black-fronted tern/tarapirohe (Chlidonias albostriatus) - a bit of a standout among the white-fronted terns because of the orange legs (and smaller body). As he gets older his beak will turn orange too. In breeding plumage the cap goes black all the way to the bill. They are apparently reasonably common in the South Island and have often been recorded wintering around Wellington, but this is my first time spotting one. Plimmerton on Sunday. Bird #61 in 2022."

Have you thought about making a donation to your favourite charity?
