"I am small but mighty, full of excitement and curiosity for life. I am sure to make a great addition to a lucky household. My siblings and I have been fostered until we were big enough and old enough to find homes. We have been able to have a start in a home environment before coming back to SPCA for rehoming. As I am still young, I will need a home where I am not left alone for more than a few hours this is until I am older and settled into my new home. I am super social and love having a good play so I could go to a home with an existing gentle dog, or a confident cat. I still have a lot to learn so would love a home that has the time and patience to enroll me in puppy school, this is to help me become the best companion I know I can be."

Didn't think quick enough late yesterday afternoon. Perhaps it was the cold weather or a Corgi that just wanted to keep going.

Walking past a little 9-10 year old, innocent-looking bare footed and thin school green coloured shirted sleeveless boy who was favouring his arm and shoulder and crying and shivering. So I enquired if he was alright and he shyly said no. He said he had been kicked out of his home after he agreed with me his father had bashed him. Later he said his mother was also at home. He denied he had done anything wrong. He said he had nowhere to go and no close by people he knew.

I told him that he should talk to a teacher that he likes at his school and the teacher will surely do something for him because most teachers are good like that and they have contact details and maybe history.

I was about to take him to my home get him warmed and drive him to his home. But I hesitated. Later my wife said if I had brought a complete stranger child home I could have been accused of being involved in pedophilia.

I chose not to walk with him to his home and confront a maybe vicious, drugged parent and later the child would probably suffer the consequences for bringing another person into the "fray".

Maybe he was not guiltless as he said and looked and did do something to raise the ire of his parent/s. But of course physical reaction on children is outlawed in NZ.

I suppose I could have phoned the police and wait around for ages for them to turn up. In the end I left the poor kid sitting on the wet grass underneath a Totara tree in The Reserve.

MEDIA ADVISORY
29 July 2022
Waikanae Library to open on Monday but Service Centre remains closed
The Kāpiti Coast District Council has confirmed that it will re-open it’s Waikanae Library from Monday 1 August but the Waikanae Service Centre will remain closed for another week due to staff illness.
Interim Chief Executive Gary Simpson acknowledged that the prolonged closure of the Waikanae Service Centre was not ideal and encouraged residents to visit the Council’s primary service desk in Paraparaumu or Ōtaki Service Centre if they’re unable to access the information or support they need or make a payment online.
“We are continuing to do the best we can with the resources we have available. We are very aware that some of our Waikanae customers prefer to engage with our customer service team in person but this simply isn’t possible right now. We are hopeful, subject to staff availability that we will be able to re-open the Waikanae Service Centre from Monday 8 August.
“Waikanae residents who are unable to register their dogs online or visit our service desk in Paraparaumu or Ōtaki Service Centre before the dog registration due date won't incur late penalties for another week due the service disruption.”
Mr Simpson said a combination of staff illness, leave and high call volumes was continuing to impact the Council’s ability to answer calls.
“We’re asking customers with non-urgent queries or requests for service to contact us via email at kapiti.council@kapiticoast.govt.nz or our website, kapiticoast.govt.nz, or Antenno app. This will help ensure people requiring urgent Council assistance can access the support they need.”

Police said the man went into the ASB Bank at Coastlands mall at about 4:30pm on Friday, threatened staff and presented what appeared to be a firearm.

"No shots were fired and no one was injured during this incident, although staff were understandably shaken," police said in a statement.

The man took off with an undisclosed sum of money, fleeing the scene on foot.

The bank is located on the outer perimeter of the mall, next to a main entrance. Police want to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time and saw the man leaving.
