Yes, another one… but this one is special: it’s a falls prevention exercise class for seniors, and it only costs a gold coin. Age Concern Wellington’s Ann Dalziel has started three new weekly classes in Lower Hutt (Knox Church), Khandallah (St Barnabas Church), and Churton Park (community centre). Age Concern Wellington now has 25 Steady as You Go exercise classes running each week around the Wellington Region. From Upper Hutt to Island Bay and over to Whitby, there’s a class near you.

β€œMy balance has improved so much,” says one class participant, β€œand I’ve made many new friends here.”

These classes are designed to improve strength and balance and help prevent a fall. Steady as You Go classes improve balance and leg strength, flexibility, general fitness, and wellbeing. But most importantly perhaps, these classes are a great way to meet new people.

Classes consist of a combination of sitting, standing and walking exercises, and take around an hour. Call 04 499 6648 or visit www.ageconcernwellington.org.nz... for more information.

Falls are not a natural part of ageing!

When Upper Hutt pilot Mark Rammell flew the only New Zealand flight into the epicentre of the coronavirus pandemic, he had no idea that same virus would end his four-decade career as a pilot.
In February, he joined the flight crew of an Air New Zealand Boeing 777 in Hong Kong – bound for Wuhan. They were tasked with bringing Kiwis home on the only evacuation flight from the city.
The pandemic led to Air New Zealand parking up most of its planes and Rammell made the tough decision to retire.
Rammel traded in his jet-setting life for a more settled existence, running a function centre and gardens he owns with his wife in Kaitoke.

Trish Hina could be the greatest sportswoman you have never heard of.
A product of Naenae College, she later settled in Gisborne, where she was a social worker.
Her sporting CV includes representing New Zealand in touch, softball, rugby and rugby league.
Initially, her sporting success came in softball, playing for New Zealand and helping her club and Hutt Valley win numerous titles.
League was however her first love and in 2000 Hina was named MVP at the first women’s World Cup, where New Zealand beat Great Britain 26-4.
She was prominent in the Kiwi Ferns retaining the World Cup in 2005 and 2008.
In the 2008 defence, Hina was named MVP for a second time. In the final, New Zealand thrashed Australia 34-0, with Hina scoring two tries and kicking three conversions.
In 2010, she achieved arguably her greatest achievement by being selected to play for the Black Ferns at the World Cup.
She became the first female to win rugby and league World Cups.
Towards the end of her career, Hina was diagnosed with kidney disease and she was unable to fulfill her dream of playing Sevens at the Rio Olympics in 2016.
In 2015, she was inducted as a Hutt Valley Sports Awards legend.
