Anna Chesterfield, 37, suffered fractures to her face, legs and sternum in the incident, in the suburb of Taita, on Saturday. Police have confirmed the incident happened at a pedestrian crossing.
Chesterfield’s children, aged 10 and 8, are being cared for by family while she is in hospital.
Police are still hunting for a grey Mitsubishi Diamante, which they believe hit Chesterfield.
In a statement, police urged the driver to turn themselves into their nearest police station.
They believed the car may be missing a left, front fog light cover and have a broken windscreen.
Any members of the public that recognise the vehicle or have any information regarding the crash are urged to contact police on 105, quoting file number P045322349.

They were followed by Cambridge, Picton, Lake Tekapo, Kerikeri, Palmerston North, Paihia and Twizel.
We'd be really keen to hear your thoughts on this based on your own travels around New Zealand. Do you think Canterbury is NZ's most welcoming region? And are these our most welcoming towns?
Where in NZ have you been made to feel particularly welcome on your travels?
As usual, please put 'NFP' in your comment if you don't want it to be included in an article. Cheers.

Developers Willis Bond & Co bought the former AgResearch centre in Wallaceville, Upper Hutt, in December for an undisclosed sum with plans to convert it into 40,000 square metres of commercial space.
Director David McGuinness said there had been significant interest in work spaces that would allow people living outside of Wellington to work closer to home, and for resilient locations that were more likely to be operational after a natural disaster. Interest had been growing since the Kaikōura earthquake and was renewed following the lockdown.

"I have a bit of history here at the SPCA. I originally came in as a shy kitten in 2015. I was adopted and this is what my foster family said about me. "Sophie was shy and hid a lot when she first came home with me. I put some food by her hiding spot and a little trail towards me and she came out and was affectionate. Until she feels safe she will hide. Sophie still - three months later - hides when other people come to the house, but is brave and affectionate with me. Sophie isn't really interested in toys and prefers to sleep in the sun or hang out with me. She will either snuggle into my leg on the sofa or on my lap. When she wants attention she will pat me with her paw. In the evening I would cradle her like a baby and sing to her and rub her belly, she loved it."

The central Wellington sewerage pipe that broke, closing central city streets, was more than 100 years old.
Sewage flowed out onto the road after a pipe ruptured at the intersection of Victoria and Mercer streets on Monday afternoon.
Wellington Water confirmed the failed pipe was installed around the year 1910.
Repairing it is expected to take two to three days.

"WHAT'S SPECIAL ABOUT ME
My ideal home would have a big garden for me to explore and potter around while supervised. I would suit a family that has had dogs before as I am a big boy with a bit of strength. I would love to go for walks with my new family and check out this wonderful country we live in. When I have nothing to do I have shown the ability to escape out of medium to high fencing so I need a plan to be contained during the day that doesn't involve being tied or tethered. Going to work with my new human companion would be great for me. I am not suited to a home with/next to cats and other small animals or livestock. If you are looking for a bigger dog that is pretty laid back then make an appointment to come and meet me."
