Through Neighbourly someone in Upper Hutt wants someone else to give him a young fiejoa tree they no longer want.
Which reminds of the fellow in Wallaceville Estate who has a row of 16 feijoa trees planted to create a kind of hedge on the front of his fenceless front lawn. They are in below par condition. I don't expect any of them to suddenly go well where they are. The soil and lack of it and the rocks very little below the soil are a problem in the estate.
The Estate chap should be conceding defeat and gifting the trees but I don't expect he really knows much about gardening.

Feijoa trees are about the cheapest tree with edible fruit one can buy. Bunnings have them as little as $7.29 for a 100mm high tree and a more developed 3L variety at $26.

NZ: Share a favourite female historical figure...

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

We're all mostly familiar with Kate Sheppard's role in the women's suffrage movement (and her face on the $10 note) and you've likely heard of the bold, Jean Batten. But who else should not be forgotten? Tell us why!

Let's celebrate Women's History month as well as International Women's Day (this Wednesday) by sharing some of the lesser-known, inspiring women who've played a part in New Zealand's history.

Share your thoughts below for the We Say You Say column of the local paper - write NFP if you wish your comments to be excluded.

A NZ company that provides school pupils lunches is dishing out uncooked chicken and other meat such as second or third rate beef and apparently most of its meals are unappealing.

Well, write them off the supply list but no doubt personnel associated with the firm will reappear in some other form.

Uncooked or undercooked chicken, venison and pork are a no no and if the other kinds of meat such as beef and lamb are not first grade and produced in a country such as NZ, they too become dicey to ones health if undercooked. Let's face it, most people in NZ prefer quality steaks medium cooked which means pink in the centre.

Dogs should not be given raw meat (or raw eggs) either. It seems few people realise this. Dogs ceased being a natural animal hundreds of years ago and thousands of years ago in many cases and so they too are subjected to the chance of becoming sick from uncooked meat of any type.

Invasive plants like cape ivy, jasmine, honeysuckle and brambles are killing our native trees along the river trail behind Black Beech Street in Upper Hutt.

Last year we held a working bee to cut and paste the stems of these interlopers with herbicide, leaving them to die so the native trees can recover over time. We’ve achieved some amazing results, but we’ve still got a long way to go, hence we’re holding another working bee. If you can spare even a couple hours that would be a great help.

Date and time: Saturday 18 March, 9.30 am to 1.00 pm (unless raining)

Gathering point: Blackbeech Street, southern end, down access path to Riverbank.

You’ll need:
• stout footwear
• protective gloves
• one or more of the following cutting tools: Secateurs, Loppers, Pruning Saw

Poison will be provided by Forest & Bird. You might also need mozzie repellent!

Please text Sarah on 027 6100 141 or email sarahlean968@gmail.com to register your interest and for more information.
