Currently, trout fishing adds $11 million to the local economy, with more benefits forecast if mass farming is authorised. However, the NZ Federation of Freshwater Anglers has highlighted a list of potential issues with farming including disease, poaching and a blackmarket, genetic damage from escapees and polluted effluent.
