The figures from late 2023 “astounded” Hamilton West National MP Tama Potaka - who labelled the city “the epicentre of emergency housing” - and Mayor Paula Southgate is calling for urgent government action.
But Kāinga Ora says the number of vacant homes has since dropped to 34, and there’s a focus on replacing older houses on big sections with multiple homes.

- Sticky foods like chewing gum
- Hard, crunchy foods like raw vegetables, fruit, crackers, popcorn, crusty bread, and whole nuts
- Stringy meat
Remember, when you first get your dentures, it’s best to stick to soft foods that don’t require a lot of chewing.
Gradually transition to solid foods, but be sure to cut them into small pieces and chew slowly. Avoid holding any drink in your mouth for too long as it could loosen the bottom dentures. And don’t forget to avoid spicy foods as they can irritate sores that may exist underneath the false teeth on your gums.

From February 1, Hamilton is cutting down on the types of plastic taken for recycling, and will no longer accept “hard to recycle” types 3,4, 6 and 7 - and “bin cops” will be out issuing warnings.
It’s part of Aotearoa’s new standardised kerbside recycling strategy, under which all councils will only be accepting 1, 2, and 5 in kerbside recycling bins.
