"We have a lovely young couple across the road from us at number 13, Glenaven Drive, called Kirsty and Jeremy. We have recently moved to Motueka and they have been very helpful and friendly right from the start. During Lockdown they did shopping for us and let us have soil from their excavations for our garden improvements. Later on, they have given us lemons, gave spare concrete when they had some delivered for themselves and watered our plants when we were able to go away and visit our new grandchild. They are gems and have made us really happy that we've chosen Motueka as our home."

UPDATE AS AT 8:30AM, SUN 19 JUL
As a result of earlier severe weather impacting all roads, any travel in this region should be taken under caution. Please take extra care. Go slow, watch out for remaining surface flooding, new road surface damage, new slips, and/or fallen tree and other debris today.
STATE HIGHWAYS STILL CLOSED
- SH1 Kaitaia to Okaihau (including the Mangamuka Gorge) - Multiple slips & flooding (not expected to reopen for some time).
CAUTION
- SH1 Kawakawa - Take extra care.
- SH11 Opua to Kawakawa - Take extra care.
- SH12 Kaikohe to Omapere - One lane open on Taheke River Bridge
- SH15 Kaikohe to Maungatapere - Take extra care

What can be achieved in a day...
Fantastic to see the progress that was made yesterday (Saturday) clearing slips, fallen trees etc off roads around the region. We have included the most recent (Saturday evening) updates from Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency - Northland, Whangarei District Council and Far North District Council in the Comments below (original post) but please check their pages for the latest status. We're still recommending that people avoid non-essential travel.
Water levels are still close to (or on) the road in a number of locations around the region and please be advised that rivers will rise quickly again with any further rainfall. So please remain aware that the situation can change again rapidly with roads and particularly bridges that may have been passable even 30 minutes earlier.
Getting the roading network back up and running remains a priority - roading authorities and contractors are gaining a clearer picture of what needs to be done around the region but there is significant damage in some places and some of the repairs will require detailed engineering and planning.
Water treatment plants in Whangarei and Paihia (supplying Opua/Paihia/Waitangi) are still undergoing urgent repairs and households and businesses are still being asked to conserve water - please take these messages seriously. Although it seems strange that an oversupply of water falling from the sky can lead to a shortage of drinking water, that is the reality at the moment.

State Highway 1 in the Far North is closed in the Mangamukas from Makene Rd to Victoria Valley Rd and is likely to remain that way for several days - the photo give an indication of why.

Whānau Mārama: New Zealand International Film Festival runs 24 July to 2 August with 79 feature films and seven short film collections from 41 countries screening in the unique At Home – Online digital edition. Browse the programme and choose from documentaries, drama, doco-drama, short films, animation and a special programme for kids, and enjoy special filmmaker introductions and Q&As.
Selected films will also screen in 16 cinemas and theatres in eight cities – Auckland, Tauranga, Napier, New Plymouth, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin and Gore.

The COVID lockdown accelerated Kiwi’s switch to online banking and those still wanting to make the change will get an extra helping hand in Northland over coming weeks.
DORA – the unique WiFi enabled bus supported by Kiwibank – is visiting local libraries to help people explore alternatives to paying by cheque, learn online banking and how to recognise and avoid online scams.
The lockdown meant DORA, which stands for Digital On Road Access, had to park up, but now it’s ready again to offer its unique online banking classes.
The Digital Inclusion Alliance Aotearoa (DIAA) has partnered with Kiwibank to develop a Stepping UP training module for online banking and, with DORA’s help, more people can get the help they need to make the switch.
The training is delivered free and it is open to anyone, regardless of who they bank with.
The Northland public library teams have joined up to deliver the classes on-board DORA, near libraries in Kerikeri, Paihia, Kawakawa, Kaikohe, Dargaville and Whangarei, starting at the Procter Library in Kerikeri on Monday 20 July.
Paula Urlich, Library Manager for Whangarei Libraries says: “We have a lot of people living in Northland who are geographically isolated and being able to do their banking online is one way to help them manage their lives.”
Laurence Zwimpfer, Operations Director of the Digital Inclusion Alliance, said that DIAA has been contacting community groups in the Whangarei, Far North and Kaipara districts, especially those involved in delivering social services and supporting elderly people.
“We have had a positive response from Rural Women, Grey Power and RSA representatives and we’re looking to other groups to help share the opportunity by alerting their members to the training.”
“Through the Covid-19 lockdown period we know that people who were digitally excluded faced more barriers than those who were digitally enabled, and that’s why we are so passionate about programmes like Stepping UP, which help people build their confidence and skills over time. Being able to offer these programmes again to the Northland community is hugely exciting for us.”
“Our experience is that changes in the banking world have the greatest impact on people who are digitally excluded. No one needs to be left out and the Stepping UP programme has already provided many New Zealanders with the skills and confidence to use online banking,” Mr Zwimpfer says.
DORA will be supporting Digital Banking classes in Northland from 20 July to 7 August. People who are interested can book a place by contacting their local library. Sessions are held 10am -12 noon and 1pm – 3pm, weekdays.
