Nominated by Annika Corley from Tauranga: "Benny and Brew - Our neighbourhood was missing a great cafe and meeting place. Since Benny and Brew has opened they have given our neighbourhood a massive lift. The coffee is great and the food is divine! It's one of those places where you go for the people, and the fact the food and drink are delicious is icing on the cake. For a bit, they were able to open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings as a French bistro and the food was to die for! Due to some difficulty finding staff in the time of Covid, unfortunately, the bistro isn't currently happening. These guys have worked so hard and brought such joy to our neighbourhood. I would love to see them get an award!"

Warm neutrals: More than ever after 2020, we’re looking at our homes as tranquil retreats from a chaotic world. Calming, neutral tones take the lead - and although greys and whites continue to be popular, interior palettes are warming up. For contemporary neutrals consider colours like cream, oatmeal, sand and taupe.
Fear not though - neutrals don’t have to mean boring! Play on light and dark variations, subtle patterns and layering textures to keep things interesting.
Maximalism: In complete contrast to calming neutrals, maximalism is all about embracing clashing patterns, saturated colours and dynamic interior combinations.
Forget “less is more” - be bold and bring a little fun into your home this year!
Smart technology: Open and close your window treatments at the touch of a button with a remote or mobile app - or add them to your home automation system. Motorisation is taking off in Kiwi homes and curtains and blinds are no exception.
With an app you can pre-set your window treatments to open or close on a timer or do it instantly from your phone - even when you’re not at home.

The reason they gave for that decision was that it didn't have community support. They then went on to give recognition to a community proposal for a shared boardwalk by putting it forward for a feasibility study in the Long Term Plan.
Many will support those decisions and others will oppose them. But, putting that debate aside, the point to be noted is that the commissioners didn't merely pay lip service to the community's concerns and wishes, they listened, weighed them up then did something about acting on them. In the past, the majority of our elected councillors have not done that: they have simply pretended to listen and then danced to the tune played by the CEO and staff. The majority who tried to do their best for the community were often derided and, in some cases, abused by the mayor and some fellow councillors.
In her briefing to the commissioners Minister Mahuta instructed them to "determine a mechanism for engaging with the community." What better mechanism could there be than COMMUNITY BOARDS. Residents need to have a greater measure of power put into their hands. If that's the way you feel, tell the commissioners when the review comes out in May or June that you want community boards for Tauranga. You can also make a pre-emptive strike by contacting the commissioners right now and telling them your wishes.

I know a homeless Maori family of 5 who have been struggling for about a year to find a house to rent and who currently sleep in tents in the park.
Like us, you may have a house with two or three spare bedrooms, but are concerned that if you let a family move in until they can find a more permanent place to rent, it could be a very long wait, and you are just not willing to make that kind of commitment or take such a risk.
Perhaps, if you were part of a group of 4 or 5 people or more who were willing to take turns for 2-4 weeks housing a family such as that above, you would be able to express your concern for the homeless in a really significant way.
Please contact me, David Kidd, at churchofgodslove4@gmail.com or 02041283124 if you do have spare bedrooms you might be prepared to rent short term, and would like to come to a meeting discussing how this idea could really work for the homeless.
WINTERS COMING, so please get back to me ASAP, so we can soon bring good news to a family, hopefully the one I mentioned above.
Please could you tell anyone you think might be interested.
Regards
David

There are 110 community boards in NZ. Tauranga has always dodged having to have one.
Boards are best described as grass roots local government. The job of the board members, who are elected every 3 years, is to represent and advocate for local needs and wishes. And, the council is bound by statute to pay attention!
You do not have to join boards; you are a part of them simply by being a member of the community.
Board members are not councillors and do not have a seat at the council table. However, they often take part in council deliberations that affect their community. They can actually play a meaningful part in the decision making process.
Boards are funded by the council and are provided with assistance from council staff where it is needed. The members also have access to council resources and information in a way that is not available to other community groups.
Tauranga residents are no longer represented by local councillors, they have no-one to speak on their behalf. And, this situation could possibly continue until 2025. We NEED community boards!
When the review proposal comes out in May or June, have your say:
TELL THE COUNCIL THAT TAURANGA RESIDENTS WANT COMMUNITY BOARDS.

NORTHLAND: Wayne and Kate - Engraving Systems
"Wayne and Kate have been trying to support all the local sports clubs and businesses with great service and going that extra mile to help. They really have brought some life back into the community and should be acknowledged and rewarded for all the hard work."
AUCKLAND: Lynnae Palu - F45 Training Takapuna
"With no ability to trade in Level 3 or above, they still keep their members engaged and motivated with online workouts and daily challenges even though memberships are on hold and the gym is closed. They really are more like a family than a gym ❤️."
WAIKATO: Team at Incredible India - Incredible India Restaurant
"Not only do they make the most authentic, delicious Indian food. Their service is thoughtful and kind. We always feel appreciated for using their establishment, either by the warm greeting we get, the offer of a drink if we are waiting for take-out and their cute handwritten messages on the carry bag of dinner. They put the effort into the whole package not just making money."
BAY OF PLENTY: Team at Benny and Brew - Benny and Brew
"Our neighbourhood was missing a great cafe and meeting place. Since Benny and Brew have opened they have given our neighbourhood a massive lift. It's a place where you go for the people and the food and drink are delicious which is icing on the cake. For a bit, they were operating as a French bistro and the food was to die for! HAWKE’S BAY - GISBORNE: Jazz and his family - Bossman Dairy - Creagh St Store
"Every member of this family who serves in the shop are very friendly, helpful and always smiling. They get to know all their customers and I have never walked into a shop that makes you feel so welcome. During our first lockdown for Covid, they put food such as milk, bread, out for people who may need it free of charge."
TARANAKI: Reece and family - Valentine's Valet
"Reece the owner of Valentine’s Valet, often helped by his Dad, mainly deals with lawns and gardens but he runs both a Carpet Cleaning and a Car Buffing business also. He is extremely hard-working, helpful and friendly and is happy to do the odd job that doesn’t fall into one of his usual categories. He comes to us fortnightly and we could not do without him. If anyone deserves an award it is — Reece Valentine!"
MANAWATU-WANGANUI: Jamie - JD Hair Design
"Jamie is amazing - not only does he offer incredible haircuts at an affordable price he is a genuinely caring man. With a heart of gold, everyone is whānau to him and he treats you like it. I always leave his salon looking fabulous but also feeling fabulous. He is the type of man that fills your inner well of good feelings while he makes you feel and look special."
WELLINGTON: Meredith and Craig - Avalon Service Centre
"Meredith and Craig Butland and their team do a wonderful job and go the extra mile to make sure every job is to the customer's satisfaction. They drop people at their workplaces and pick them up when work on the car is finished. They take the time to talk to customers about anything and are great neighbours to the local residents. Avalon Service Centre are definitely our local heroes in Avalon."
NELSON - MARLBOROUGH: Mary Jane and Colin - Lemon Tree Lane
"Lemon Tree Lane is a great big little gift shop. I am so grateful for Mary Jane and Colin's 'You are very welcome' and 'it's no trouble at all' attitude. Their prices are very reasonable, they always happily gift wrap with beautiful papers and ribbons as a part of their service. I truly can't speak highly enough of this community-minded couple and their classy, extensive range of items that never leave us disappointed."
CANTERBURY - WEST: Troy Cameron - ATC Accounting Services
"Troy Cameron is a local accountant. He is an awesome family man and it is not unusual to see Matilda, his Kune Kune pig, snuggled up with his dog and daughter in his lounge. It was the flying pig on his flyer that made me call him 2 years ago and as we had just gone into business which was scary in itself, let alone dealing with an accountant, we have never looked back. Troy goes the extra mile and his fees are more than reasonable"
OTAGO - SOUTHLAND: Richard Smith - CJ Sinclair
"The owner is Richard Smith whose family have been in the motor trade in the Ranfurly Naseby area for over 100 years. During the last years lock down our car broke down leaving us feeling quite uncomfortable as we live some distance from medical & other services. Richard came to our rescue. We need such companies and people in our rural areas. Richard demonstrates such excellent attributes required in our area."
