Rattan is an attractive, lightweight, and durable material for furniture. It’s also eco-friendly, as the plants are fast-growing and plentiful. Whether you choose to display your rattan indoors or out, following these steps will keep your rattan clean and in good repair.

You Will Need:
• Dishwashing detergent
• Water
• Soft cloth(s)
• Bowl
• Toothbrush
• Boiled linseed oil
• Lacquer

• Paintbrush

Steps to Clean the Rattan:Fill a bowl with water. Add a few drops of dish detergent and stir to agitate until bubbles form on the surface.

Dip a soft cloth into the bubbles only, not into the water.

Wipe the rattan with the bubbles. The slight moisture cleans without over-wetting the rattan, which can cause damage.

Use a toothbrush or other soft brush to clean in the cracks and crevices, using the same suds-only cleaning method.

For a thorough cleaning or to remove stains, apply detergent and scrub with slightly more water than you do for routine cleaning. As soon as you’re done, dry the rattan with a hot hair dryer or set it out in the sun. Once the rattan has dried completely, apply a coat of lacquer with a paintbrush to provide added protection if desired. Repeat annually.

Additional Tips and Advice:

To restore dry, cracked, or split rattan, apply boiled linseed oil with a brush. When the furniture won’t absorb any more oil, wipe it clean with a soft cloth. Allow it to dry or harden before using the rattan again. Make sure you use BOILED linseed oil. Raw linseed oil will not dry or harden. Boiled linseed oil is available at most hardware stores. (You do not actually boil it yourself.)

It’s time to embrace Mother Nature in all her glory and meet our badass green babe, Tina Tape Yarn made from happy tree fibres.

We’re always on the hunt for yarns with a bit of soul and this time ‘round, we worked with suppliers known for their sustainable technology to create something really special – and what we ended up with is better than our wildest yarn dreams!

How it works: Our newest gal is made from Tencel (AKA happy tree fibres). Wood from sustainably harvested eucalyptus trees is squished into pulp, before being pressed and spun into yarn. What’s great about this process is that the raw wood materials are cultivated from forest land that isn’t suitable for agriculture. Eucalyptus grows where no other tree can, which cuts down on unnecessary land use!

When the whole process is said and done, something beautiful remains! Tina Tape Yarn is more absorbent than cotton, softer than silk and cooler than linen – GO TINA!

Why is Eucalyptus Yarn the real deal? Keep reading: www.curtainclean.co.nz...

A fruitful idea: Orange Fibre

While the peels are of course biodegradable, it still costs a lot of money to dispose of them properly. The start-up Orange Fibre, run by Adriana Santanocito and Enrica Arena, has developed a new kind of fabric, which is entirely made of waste citrus fruit peels.

The idea came to Santanocito while working on her thesis in fashion design. Since Sicily, where she is from, is responsible for a major amount of peels, she tried to think of a way to reduce the amount of waste. And thus the idea to make fabric from the discarded peels was born.

The peels are processed with a patented method to extract the cellulose that is spun to form the final yarn. The fabric looks and feels like silk: soft to the touch and a shiny appearance. The biodegradable yarn can be spun with any type of existing yarn.

Aside from looking pretty and feeling nice, the orange yarn has an additional benefit: thanks to nanotechnology, the material still contains essential oils and vitamin C that are present in the citrus fruit peel. The skin absorbs these oils and is nourished by them, making the fabric a wearable body cream. According to Orange Fibre, despite the oils, the fabric does not feel greasy.
