The internet is awash with natural cleaning hacks. We put them to the test.

1. REMOVING A WATERMARK BY RUBBING WITH A WALNUT

The advice: Get rid of watermarks on wood by rubbing it with pieces of walnut (the nut not the shell).

How it worked: Vigorous rubbing was needed and we went through a few walnuts, but gradually the watermark disappeared. A quick polish with a clean cloth to finish it off.

Worth repeating? Yes, we were surprised at how well it worked, we even tried it on larger surfaces and it did the trick there too. | Rating: 5/5

2. USE OIL TO GET RID OF GREASE STAINS ON STAINLESS STEEL

The advice: Use a smear of olive oil (or similar) on a rag to clean fingerprints and grease smears off stainless steel appliances.

How it worked: Like a dream! It was easier and neater than using the spray-on stainless steel cleaner I have been buying from the supermarket. Trick is not to use too much, you just need the slightest smear...

This is straight off the TCC Website - re Heavy Metals in your pipes!

"Plumbosolvency
Flush those taps!
We're encouraging Western Bay residents to flush their water taps daily before drinking or using water for cooking. Why you ask? To get rid of any heavy metals absorbed from household plumbing.

While we are sleeping, or when we don't use our water taps for a number of hours, heavy metals from plumbing fittings - lead, nickel, cadmium, copper and antimony - can dissolve into our water.

To ensure we are not drinking these metals, the Ministry of Health recommends you tip out the first 500ml of water from the cold tap each morning and after returning home at the end of a day away.

Problem solved!" Copied off TCC website.

(REALLY? ) 500 mls is nothing! Run your tap a good 30 secs in the morning, and this will flush about 5 litres through. And if you've a long driveway, make it a minute at least!

Installing a water filter is a much more reliable way to prevent ingesting heavy metals in your water supply!

For more information, see the Ministry of Health's fact sheet.

This is an American article, but has a lot of relevant info too about heavy metals potentially in our water supply.
