We know that when kids are involved in preparing for emergencies and learning about natural hazards, they encourage their families to be more prepared and play a more active role in responding to and recovering from emergencies.
As part of Get Ready Week 2016, we are launching our redeveloped schools resource What’s the Plan, encouraging schools to update their emergency preparedness plans and use the new resource to build resilience as a life skill for their students.
Here are our top tips for Prepared Kids
1. Give the school or day care a list of three people who can pick the kids up if you can’t get there.
2. Talk to your kids in an honest (but not scary) way about what might happen in an emergency, what you can do to keep safe, and what your plan is for if you can’t get home. The more involved they are, the less scared they will be if an emergency does happen.
3. Make a plan with your kids. Sit down together and talk about the things you need every day and work out what you would do if you didn’t have them. Grab a piece of paper and write down what you agree, who you need to contact and things you need to do to get ready.
4. Get your kids involved in getting supplies and checking them regularly. In an emergency you could be stuck at home for three
days or more. You probably have most of these things already, and you don’t have to have them all in one place, but you might have to find them in a hurry and/or in the dark.

The Tauranga Moana Interfaith Council invites people of all faiths and no faith, all who have in interest in peace, to join with us in praying for world peace.
We are sponsoring an interfaith event in support of this week. This will be held in The Village Hall at the Tauranga Historic Village on 17th Avenue, on Wednesday 12th October at 7.00 pm, gathering from 6:30pm for a 7pm start followed by light refreshments afterward.
This will be the third such event we have held. At each event each of the faiths present have expressed their hope of world peace in a manner reflective of their faith. Last year this included music, prayers, readings and talks on world peace.
World Peace starts at home. These events are designed to help us grow our understanding of each other and the range of faiths present in our city. In doing so we hope to build peace. So please join us on October 12th and join a diverse range of faith groups here in Tauranga Moana pray for world peace.
Please help us promote this important event. I have attached the poster for this year’s event. Please advertise the event to all and sundry.

The Council shall exist to foster mutual appreciation and good relations between these traditions and communities; to coordinate action, and/or to act, on behalf of any or all of these communities in respect of religious issues and relationships to society at large; and to act in an advisory and consultative capacity to the community at large; and to support the New Zealand Statement on Religious Diversity.

All will be open Saturday morning (8am-12pm for the Customer Service Centre, libraries from 9.30am). Voting will close at 12pm sharp on Saturday. Get in there!
