The confronting truth of what happened in our recent past is something New Zealanders have to reckon with. When the Treaty of Waitangi was signed, Māori owned more than 66 million acres of land. By 1975, almost 97 per cent had been sold or taken.

The land wars of the 1860s saw the confiscation of half a million hectares in Waikato. People were driven from their homes. The second Māori king, Tāwhiao, and his followers became refugees in the King Country.

Road closures during Hoka One One Taupo Marathon on Saturday

To help keep everybody safe, road closures will be in place on Saturday along part of Tongariro Street, Lake Terrace, Ferry Road and Story Place from 6.30am as shown on the map.

Best of luck to everyone taking part in the Hoka One One Taupo Marathon this weekend!

To help keep everybody safe, road closures will be in place on Saturday along part of Tongariro Street, Lake Terrace, Ferry Road and Story Place from 6.30am as shown on the map.

Please be aware a new course is being used this year which will see runners and walkers going through Acacia Bay between 8am and 11.30am, but there are no road closures in this area.

If you’re out and about please take extra care and keep an eye out for all competitors. Thanks everybody!
