Hi there,
Canterbury has been named the fifth most welcoming region in the world in the Booking.com Traveller Review Awards, while Oamaru, Hokitika and Invercargill have been named the most welcoming towns in NZ. They were followed by Cambridge, Picton, Lake Tekapo, Kerikeri, Palmerston North, Paihia and Twizel.
We'd be really keen to hear your thoughts on this based on your own travels around New Zealand. Do you think Canterbury is NZ's most welcoming region? And are these our most welcoming towns?
Where in NZ have you been made to feel particularly welcome on your travels?
As usual, please put 'NFP' in your comment if you don't want it to be included in an article. Cheers.

The second phase of the Horomatangi Street and Ruapehu Street intersection will get underway next Tuesday, February 2.

This will include the finishing touches to the roundabout and the four corners including landscaping, seating and paving.

Project manager Darren Penketh said the work would begin on the eastern (school) side of the intersection and progress over a 12 week period.

“We will ensure minimal disruption over this time, including aiming to have all roads remaining open during the day.

“We’re asking motorists to be careful and slow down, as our contractors will be working in the area, with small shoulders of the road closed, but roads remaining open to through-traffic.

“Thank you to everyone – particularly affected businesses – for your patience while we have worked to transform this area,” Mr Penketh said.

The work is part of the government-funded Taupō Town Centre Transformation project which aims to ensure the continued and sustainable growth and development of Taupō's town centre, with a focus on the needs of our community.

It will transform our public places into spaces that attract people to spend time and invest in the town centre. It will also deliver on the community’s aspirations for an attractive town centre with shared streets, focused on the needs of pedestrians and cyclists.

A new exhibition that explores what it is that makes us Kiwis will open at the Taupō Museum next month.

The Experimental 200s is an exhibition from former Taupō artist Lianne Adams, opening Saturday February 6 and running until Monday March 22.

Exhibitions officer Kerence Stephen said Adams was an artist who drew on her background as an international artist and graphic designer to create bespoke pieces that comprised both computer-based designs and traditional art.

“She has a distinct style and has a personal touch to all her work,” Ms Stephen said. “With a love of New Zealand and a story to tell, Lianne’s works are drawn from her heart and made with love.”

The Experimental 200s were created before and through lockdown, so Adams has made do with the limited tools and equipment she had available to her during this time.

“Supplies were scarce and Lianne used what was in her workshop supply cupboard to the maximum,” Ms Stephen said.

Adams has been a regular exhibitor at Taupō Museum for many years and her tiki prints were popular items at the museum shop, Ms Stephen said. Adams’ last exhibition at Taupo Museum in summer 2019 nearly sold out.

The community is welcome to join Adams for the official opening morning tea of The Experimental 200s on Saturday February 6 at 10am.

Taupō Museum is open seven days from 10am to 4.30pm and entry is free to Taupō District residents with proof of address.
