Gilli, a well-known and much-loved Taupō identity, was passionate about encouraging emerging painters, sculptors, poets and writers, many of whom owe their subsequent success to the encouragement and financial backing so generously given to them by her.
She amassed an extensive collection of works of art and has shared this passion through gifts to the Taupō Museum and Art Gallery, the Taupō District Council and to the Waitakaruru Arboretum Sculpture Gardens.
Brett Taylor’s magnificent “Heartland Taupō” sculpture beside the Museum, Robbie Graham’s imposing “The Crossing” on the Taupō lakefront and the Ora Garden of Well-Being at the Taupō Museum were made possible through Gilli’s philanthropic foresight ensuring a legacy to be enjoyed by future generations of art-lovers.
In keeping with her ideals, an eclectic collection of artworks from Gilli’s Estate will be for sale by tender at the Taupō Museum from 14 August to 20 September 2021.
Among the exhibits is a work by the sought-after artist Charles Barraud of Lake Taupō which will be auctioned separately at the Waikato Art Auction on 20 September.
The Friends of the Taupō Museum and Art Gallery will be hosting an opening function on Friday 13 August at 5.30pm. All proceeds will be invested and administered for the support of future young artists in the Taupō District.
The Museum and Art Gallery is open seven days from 10am to 4.30pm and entry is free to Taupō District residents with proof of address.

Taupō District Mayor David Trewavas and councillors, representatives from Bike Taupō, local contractors and council staff joined with Reverend Peace to bless the site and mark the commencement of the $3.6 million government funded project.
General Manager of Operations and Delivery Kevin Strongman is delighted to receive the funding and is excited about the project.
“The path will provide access to current and future residential developments and help to connect our communities going into the future.
“Upgrading the current unsealed surface to concrete opens access to many different users, helping them to get around the area too.
“We’re really lucky to receive this funding as our regular schedule of footpath upgrades and maintenance work were all outside the requirements for this funding,” he said.
The shared use path provides a travel area separate from motorised traffic for pedestrians, skaters, wheelchair users, joggers, dog walkers and other users and can provide a low-stress experience for a variety of users using the network for transportation or recreation.
Implementation of the project rests with locally employed workers from CAMEX and is expected to be completed June 2022, weather permitting.

The options for doing so are endless! Being kind doesn’t have to cost a thing, after all a smile is free. For those who want to go the extra mile, here’s some other ideas: take a gift over to new neighbours and introduce yourself, build a free community library for your street, buy extra kai at the grocery store to donate to a food bank, bring treats into work for colleagues, send an encouraging text to someone who needs it, let a car into the traffic ahead of you, write positive messages in chalk on sidewalks around your neighbourhood, or surprise loved ones with a visit.
