Merril (Volunteering for 19 years)
With over 19 years as a volunteer for Lake Taupo Hospice, Merril has seen it grow from humble but determined beginnings created by a small but passionate group of volunteers, to the amazing facility and range of services offered now. “The most gratifying aspect of my involvement” says Merril “is the enormously successful development of our organisation. ‘Hospice at Home’ was and still is the primary aim, and though it was not much favoured by the medical profession in the early days, what we see now is the result of hours of dedication and belief in providing the best of care for our terminally ill and their families and carers.” Having had a hearing loss all of her life, Merril is known for her ‘Merrilisms’ which her family attribute to her ‘being deaf and left handed’ but which bring many moments of joy and laughter to those around her and ensures comraderie and team work among the volunteers. “Like so many families, mine experienced the heart-breaking loss to cancer and I am so grateful for the privilege of sharing brief, precious moments with patients and family in the long ‘goodbye’ days, and to witness the many untold stories of courage, acceptance and gratitude”. Merril uses her previous professional experience as a podiatrist to provide voluntary podiatry services to hospice patients. She is also Lake Taupo Hospice’s longest serving volunteer. “Giving is part of receiving and the need of others is real and endless” she says. And her advice to anyone considering volunteering? “Share your talents – you have no idea the pleasure sharing will bring – and how you will be welcomed, encouraged and valued”.
With over 40 different volunteer opportunities on offer from specialist technical skills through to hobbies and interests there are lots of to contribute. From patient centred roles, through ones which engage the public to those working behind the scenes there is something at Lake Taupo Hospice for everyone. "I was suspicious of the establishment at the time. You need to understand, I had grown up a welfare-dependent "half-caste" (I hate that term) boy living with his mother, escaping from a life of alcohol, crime and a level of violence that I would not tolerate for my daughters. An under-achiever, I was expelled from two secondary schools. I feel I had a reason to be angry at "the system".
"Then I became a father. It changed my life. I needed to be a responsible adult caring for a son, then a daughter – eventually seven children. We were young parents and wanted to do only the best for these precious beings.
"I read the pamphlet. It described "studies" in the Netherlands into communities that didn't look like mine, but I took little persuasion. I stated our second child, our little daughter Te Miringa, would not be immunised.
"At the time my wife Tracy was working as a nurse at the local medical centre and immunising children daily. Yet this was my protest against the establishment that I so mistrusted.
"Fifteen months later, we had a scare. Te Miringa became unwell with high fever and a body rash and the doctors were concerned as there was a measles outbreak locally. And I realised the information from the Netherlands did not reflect my reality.
"We got Te Miringa immunised."

A former teacher with a strong love of sport and dogs she has been surprised to learn just how much Lake Taupo Hospice provides for the patients – from nursing care, hospital equipment, volunteer services and activity programmes. “I wish people were aware of all the services provided to patients of all ages and problems” she says. “Being a volunteer isn’t challenging and I’ve had many rewarding experiences. The way I see things and life nowadays is the best thing. It’s priceless to make a difference in the patients’ lives but the truth is they have made a huge difference in my life too. They have taught me to see things from a very different perspective and for that I am grateful.”

part in a number of fundraising and promotional events and given a talk on Brazil to the activity programme attendees.
