Road closures for IRONMAN New Zealand events

Here's a heads-up on the road closures that will be in place around Taupo for IRONMAN New Zealand events over the next few days!

> Thursday 6pm to Friday 8.30am: Tongariro Street, from Tamamutu Street to Heuheu Street.

Here's a heads-up on the road closures that will be in place around Taupo for IRONMAN New Zealand events over the next few days!

> Thursday 6pm to Friday 8.30am: Tongariro Street, from Tamamutu Street to Heuheu Street.
> Friday 8.30am to 10.30am: Tongariro Street, from Spa Road to Lake Terrace, and Lake Terrace, from Tongariro Street to Kaimanawa Street.
> Saturday 2am to Sunday 2am: The big event kicks off at the crack of dawn on Saturday and with that there will be various road closures and detours in place around the Taupo CBD, as shown on the map. Expect delays if you're travelling through town during this time.
> Saturday 6.30am to 4pm: Broadlands Road, from Centennial drive to Taupo District Boundary, and Centennial Drive, from Rakaunui Road to Broadlands Road.
> Saturday 8am to 12am (midnight): Heeni Street, from Warewaka Road to Secombe Park Reserve Access Road, and Rainbow Drive, from Charles Crescent (northern end) to Aubrey Crescent (southern end). Residents access only.

Over the next few days please take extra care on the roads and keep an eye out for all the amazing athletes out cycling and running.

During Playcentre Awareness Week centres around the country throw open their doors so anybody who wants to visit and experience playcentre can. Some centres will be having special events.

If you cannot make a visit during Playcentre Awareness Week, feel welcome to visit any time. New members are always welcome.

With over 420 centres throughout Aotearoa there is one near you.

Spend in Turangi up last quarter

Over $17 million was spent in the Turangi area in the three months to December, with spend up 7.5 per cent compared to the same period the previous year.

The figures come from the latest Taupō District Council Marketview Report, which was presented at this month's Turangi Tongariro Community Board . It calculates total spend based on card use and divides the data into groups.

In Turangi, $17,154,000 was spent from October to December, mostly in the central and mall areas. These areas combined generated $12.2 million in spending. Spend in the mall area was up 12.9 per cent, while the amount spent in the central area was up 6.7 per cent. Other areas included the industrial area, eastern area, north of the river and the north east area.

The fire danger has hit extreme with a complete fire ban issued in the Taupō region just days before three scrub fires broke out.

As the days have been incredibly dry and hot Fire and Emergency NZ Taupō assistant area manager, Richard Anastasi, said the local fire brigades' concern was increasing each day.

Those concerns became reality when a campground had to be evacuated over the weekend as firefighters fought to get a large scrub fire under control. Read more here.

Taupō has had around 22 straight days of sunshine with temperatures hitting the high 20s and low 30s.

Junior doctors at Waikato Hospital and other District Health Boards are striking from 8 am on Tuesday 26 February to 8 am on Thursday 28 February.

Services will be affected as there will be fewer staff on duty.
We will be deferring some appointments for surgery, treatments and outpatient clinics and giving priority to the emergency, intensive care and maternity.

All patients whose operations or clinical appointments are affected by the strike will be notified by telephone. Not all clinics are being deferred, so if you have not been notified please call the service to confirm. If you are unsure please call 0800 276 216.

Please save the hospital Emergency Department for emergencies.
If your illness or injury is not urgent, you may face long delays.
Go to your family doctor or local accident and medical centre
