MetService has issued a warning for heavy rain and severe gales for parts of northern and central New Zealand.

Watch for strong winds in Taupo, Taihape, Wanganui, Manawatu and Horowhenua Kapiti Coast. Taumarunui is also expected to receive strong winds.

Strong wind gusts could damage trees, power lines and unsecured structures. Driving may be hazardous, especially for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles. Please make sure you plan your travel and drive to the conditions. Click here for more information.

Heavy machinery will be used for this phase of the project, and river levels will be lowered to accommodate this, so from June 6 – June 20 the bathing area will be closed to the public for safety reasons.

Contractors will endeavour to keep access open during weekends when possible. Signage will indicate when the pools are open.

This winter, St John urges the public to prioritise health & wellbeing. The most important thing you can do is be immunised against influenza and seek advice from a health professional if you are unwell. Each winter the surge of 111 ambulance calls continues to increase, which despite St John’s best efforts to triage and treat people in-home, places a lot of pressure on the ambulance service and the hospital emergency departments.

Each year about 3,000 New Zealanders are diagnosed with the disease and more than 1,200 will die. That’s as many as breast and prostate cancer combined.
