Close to 42,000 customers booked to travel domestically and internationally on that date now face potential flight cancellations, the airline has said. Following feedback from the community and discussions with Police, the alcohol ban will … View moreA new Alcohol Control Bylaw will come into effect on Friday, December 7 with changes to the existing alcohol ban areas and the inclusion of the Otumuheke Stream bathing area in Spa Park for the first time.
Following feedback from the community and discussions with Police, the alcohol ban will now include town centre areas in Taupō between 4pm Thursday until 7am Monday and in Mangakino between 7pm Friday and 7am Sunday. These bans also apply to public holidays. Over the New Year period alcohol bans cover Taupō, Mangakino and Turangi town centres, lakefront reserve areas and Hipapatua Reserve (Reids Farm) from noon December 27 and 7am January 4 each year.
At Otumuheke Stream bathing area in Spa Park, there will be a permanent ban put in place following the improvements and beautification project completed this year.

Tuesday's storm over the Waikato caused havoc for some locals, including Clem Newby whose cows were struck by lightning. The dairy farmer said he heard a "hell of a bang" before finding four cows had died when hit by lightning. "The lightning was just horrific and it really frightened myself. I had never heard anything like it in my life and it really shook the cowshed," says Clem.
