The compliance team’s resident pooch is being groomed for stardom in the Taupō District – with the energetic pup to become the district’s first dedicated education dog.

Poppy, a Hungarian vizsla/heading dog cross, was brought to the pound by a hunting dog breeder who did not need her but wanted her in safe hands. Instead of adopting her out, the compliance team decided to keep the little bundle of energy with a view to turning her into an education dog. She has just turned one, and has plenty more training to undergo before she is taken to preschools, schools and community groups for her future work.

Poundkeeper Craig O’Leary said Poppy was a happy, energetic and curious young dog who was a delightful addition to the team.

“Her natural herding ability means she is always trying to get the cat to do what she wants,” he laughed.

Through these tough times we have learned the true strength and resilience of our communities and have witnessed first hand the abundance of aroha in Aotearoa.

Now more than ever, the fern seems to best capture the spirit of our country. If we look to our Māori roots, we are reminded of the twist or pikorua which resembles two intertwined pikopiko ferns - a fern known for thriving in dark, damp areas of our woods. A reminder that difficult conditions can actually be an opportunity for tremendous growth.

The entanglement of the pikorua also has no beginning or end which is often used to represent an everlasting bond. Although we are all on our own path in life, in the end we always come back together - we are all connected through our interwoven lives.

This journey through the world of art song and Lieder probes the human psyche with an intensity no other genre, not even opera, is permitted. Unhinged. Gruelling. Hallucinatory. Joyful. Beautiful. This ranks as the most searing experience any music lover can undergo.

I have gotten so much out of toastmasters not only did it teach me to manage my nerves but also to gather my thoughts and think while I speak, how to express myself effectively, I have also gained leadership skills as well as mentoring. In addition to all these benefits I have certainly met some very interesting people and been part of a very supportive groups that learn and have fun toastmaster nights together. We will be having a demo meet up again on the Thursday the 4th of April, please feel free to check out our facebook page Tokoroa Forestlands Toastmasters for details we keep it updated and post our meetups on there. We would like to have as many guests as possible so everyone is most welcome.

Taupō District Council’s chief executive Gareth Green has been reappointed to the top job for another five years.

Mayor David Trewavas confirmed Mr Green’s reappointment following today’s council meeting.

“The role attracted a number of quality of applicants but with continuing growth in the district and a number of large projects expected over the next few years, we wanted long-term stability in the top job and continuity with the trajectory we are currently on,” Mr Trewavas said.

“Gareth has a number of skills that has served both the council and the district incredibly well since he been in the position, and we look forward to him continuing to lead the organisation as we move forward,” he said. “There are some exciting times ahead.”

Mr Green said he was honoured to have the confidence of Council to be reappointed as chief executive.

“Nothing has given me more pride than being able to make a positive contribution to the Taupō District over the last three years, and I am excited to be able to continue that for the next five,” he said.
