A new speed limit comes into force on Wairakei Drive today – the last speed change to be implemented following the introduction of Taupō District Council’s Speed Limits Bylaw 2018 in December.

Wairakei Drive, from 100m north of Norman Smith Street up Control Gates Hill to 500m north of Huka Falls Road, will be reduced to 50kmh. It had been 80kmh, but has been changed to improve safety ahead of improvements to the northern corridor into town.

Head of operations Kevin Strongman said while all other speed changes under the bylaw were implemented on December 1, this particular section of road was delayed to coincide with the roadworks that will start on Monday.

The northern corridor improvement work will include the installation of traffic signals and other minor changes at the Norman Smith Street and Wairakei Drive intersection, new signage at the northern end of the new 50kmh zone, the implementation of traffic calming measures, minor safety changes to the Poihipi Road and Wairakei Drive intersection and the completion of the widening of the existing path on Control Gates Hill.

Taupō District Council has agreed to sign the Local Government Leaders’ Climate Change Declaration 2017, confirming its commitment to respond to climate change.

The decision was made at yesterday’s council meeting following a workshop on the issue earlier this month. At that workshop, there was an impassioned plea from Taupō youth for the issue to be taken seriously for the sake of future generations.

Local Government New Zealand (LGNZ) produced a position on climate change in 2017 that highlights the need to act with urgency to avoid future risk from climate change. The majority of New Zealand councils have signed the declaration.

Mayor David Trewavas said councillors stood behind taking action and the signing of the declaration would give direction to how the council operated its business and planned for the future of the Taupō District community.

‘The children are our future.’ It’s a well-loved cliché around the world because it’s absolutely true. The hopes and dreams we have for our communities are only as strong as the children and young people who continue to believe in them long after we’re gone.

This month is all about supporting our young people, to encourage and empower them to not only be the change-makers and community builders of tomorrow but also the best versions of themselves. To listen to their perspective and remember that it’s not just about what we can teach them, but what lessons they can teach us. After all, the recipe for creating healthy, happy children includes a lot of the same ingredients for building safer, more resilient and connected communities.

Want to share your thoughts?

Let us know how you’re supporting young people in your communities this month by tagging us in your posts + using the following hashtag so we can see what you get up to:

Hipapatua Reserve (Reid’s Farm) is closed as maintenance and tree work begin.

The closure of the popular camping spot is an annual event to carry out any work required on top of the mowing and other maintenance done throughout the year. Signage will direct campers to the smaller, upper camping area, which will remain open. Day use of the lower reserve, as well as river access, will not be affected by the works.

Parks manager community and open spaces Julie Gordon said the reserve will reopen on October 1.

“The key reason we close and re-open later in the year is so the grass can recover from all of the vehicles that have been parking there during the summer months. Coupled with the warmer weather burning off a lot of the grass cover, we need a decent amount of time to get some coverage back,” she says.

“Once it’s back open, the area will be looking great again for the next camping season.”
