The sauna area at the AC Baths reopened today, following an extensive makeover to create a better experience for users.

The sauna area has been refurbished as part of ongoing upgrades to the AC Baths facilities and includes an upgraded sauna as well as a mobility toilet and shower and additional open area showers.

Facilities manager Darren Penketh said the addition of these facilities has created better accessibility for users.

“The new sauna area is a huge improvement to the pool area and provides the public with a better experience than before.

“The mobility toilet has a shower for better accessibility, and we’ve created new open area showers for users to cool off after a sauna,” Mr Penketh said.

The project was completed by Watts Construction and cost about $30,000. It was included as part of the Long Term Plan 2018/28.

Access to the sauna is strictly 18 years of age or older.

Sauna opening hours are:
- Weekdays: 6am – 8:30pm
- Weekends and public holidays: 7am – 6:30pm

Entry to the sauna is included as part of the pool entry fee.

Taupō’s iconic #LOVETAUPO sign on the lakefront is about to get a spruce up, in time for the busy holiday period.

The popular visitor spot is being upgraded as part of the government funded Taupō Town Centre Transformation project which aims to transform our public places into spaces that attract people to spend time and invest in the town centre.

The upgrade of the #LOVETAUPO sign involves upgrading the area surrounding the signage with pavers, etched concrete and timber platforms.

Landscape architect Fraser Scott said the idea is to create a more robust area to support the increasing number of visitors to the site.

“We have seen the popularity of the #lovetaupo sign continue to soar and this work will ensure the site can continue to cope with those numbers.

“It will also allow us to further beautify the area, with the design based around tying people, cultures and our environment together to enhance our unique landscape and better connect with our lakefront,” he said.

Work will get underway on Monday December 7 and is expected to be complete by Monday December 21. During this time, there will be a replacement #lovetaupo sign on Colonel Roberts Reserve.

The first phase of the Taupō Airport terminal upgrade is now underway, with the laying of new wastewater and water pipes.

The $9.2 million airport upgrade is being funded by the government’s Provincial Growth Fund ($5 million) and the New Zealand Upgrade Programme ($870,000) in partnership with the council, which will fund the remainder. It will see a new terminal built, the car park extended, and the airside apron expanded in order to operate larger aircraft safely.

Airport upgrade project manager Philip King said the laying of these pipes was the first step toward upgrading the airport.

“This is the first of any physical work the community will be able to see and it’s an exciting step we’re able to take in the lead up to the build,” he said.

“It will allow us to upgrade the current services which include a septic tank, future-proofing the area and ensuring we are creating a world-class facility.”

The wastewater and water pipes would be laid starting just beyond the Mobil service station and progressing toward the current airport terminal. The northern shoulder of the road would likely be closed over the section contractors were working on but disruption would be minimal and the road would remain open. This phase of the project was expected to be completed by the end of March next year.

A detailed design is expected to be finalised in early 2021 and terminal construction is expected to begin in mid-2021.
